Total Time = 2h 13m 5s
Overall Rank = 249/310
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 16/19
Pre-race routine:

woke up, put on sunblock, got dressed, ate some oatmeal, left
Event warmup:

none, quick lap on the bike to make sure brakes/shifting were ok
Swim
  • 24m
  • 450 meters
  • 05m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

i did not freak. the swim was easy. there were lots of breaststrokers, which clobbered me around a bit. i take it back when i say it was easy - this was supposed to be a 750 m swim, and my pace is garbage. there were storms friday night which caused the river to be a little rough, and a lot of people did not finish this. but in terms of open water panic - nothing
What would you do differently?:

practice swimming on and around people more. one dude nailed me on the back and nearly took me under at the turn buoy.
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Bike
  • 1h 11m 49s
  • 18.8 miles
  • 15.71 mile/hr
Comments:

practiced this 2 weeks before the race with Artemis and QueenZipp. i was really glad to know what to expect. it was a lot harder than last time after that rough swim, but i was strong. passed maybe 10 folks, and got passed by about 10. the hill did kill me at the end. and i was able to drink while riding! yay! (small accomplishment, but i always lost my balance before)
What would you do differently?:

not sure what i could have changed. my goal time was 1:10 so i did pretty much what i planned.
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Run
  • 34m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

i tried to take the run kind of easy. this is where i struggle the most. being in the woods and the sun hiding kept my pretty cool the whole run. i walked a teensy bit around the 1st mile marker, but still hit my goal pace of <11mins. i had a LOT left in me when i hit the final stretch, wish i would have pushed a little harder in the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

i just need to run more. maybe run with others, because it will push me just like my group rides have improved my cycling. i have it in my head that i can't run because of my asthma, i need to get over that.
Post race
Warm down:

stuff my face with barbecue, then change out of my trisuit and load up the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my running fitness. and the current.

Lady Swole - YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE!

I looked at the distance of the swim, then the time, then had to read what was going on, cuz I know that I am one of the slowest swimmers on the face of this earth, and if anyone has gone slower than me, then something's not right.

Did you get the dude back from that back hit?  I would've.

Great job!

the river was FAST.  i am comfortable and strong on the swim, it was just hard to make any progress at all and you spent just about NO time with the current, always against.

i popped my head up, yelled, and kicked him to get untangled from the turn buoy.  i have no idea who he was or how he did on the course, but he did start swimming 3 minutes before i did!

River swim doesn't sound like fun.  You should see if you can find the speed of the current and figure how far you really swam.  Great job on the race, though!  Nothing quite like finishing your first tri.
