Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I need your help as my husband and me have a little argument over something and we would like an opinion of someone else. Yesterday I missed a 90 minutes bike ride in my training plan as I was called in for work and was gone the whole evening and night. Freaking out a little bit over it I switched the rest of my week around so I can somehow manage to get that ride it. But now I have the problem that I will be biking 4 days in a row and have a 90min bike ride the day before my long bike. My husband said to just skip the ride completely and not make up for it at all. A missed workout is a missed workout.... What is the best thing to do?

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It depends on what the workout is. If it's a key workout for the week, I'll shuffle my schedule. If it is a recovery run or something that is more about the miles I may skip it altogether. You can't get back lost time but you can injure yourself trying to pack more workouts in before the mythical week end. Just my $0.02 coming from a MOP amateur! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() unless its a big keyworkout i let it go, one workout in the scheme of things is going to matter little. if its a more important one i will put it in place of something smaller and just cut out the other workout. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() another thing to help put this idea into prespective. you are training weeks, months for race, years even, one ride in that total is nothing. day to day consistancy matters much more. the athlete that is able to train daily, even at lower volumes is going to do better than someone throwing down some bigger workouts, and hten needing more recovery or time between. |

I will generally try to fit the workout in at some other point during the week... IF it makes sense and I can do it. Based on what you said, you are probably better off just skipping it. That way, you can give your legs a rest day before your long ride. Just put that much more effort towards the long ride. It will be fine missing one workout. ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I try to switch things around so that I can hit them later in the week but if the end of the week comes and I still haven't gotten to them, I just skip them all together. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just skip it completely and possibly lengthen the workouts of the same dicipline throughout the week to make up for some of it, usually not all of it tho. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for your input everyone. I will see how the rest of the week go and then determine if I can still do it or not. I just hate missing workouts as I usually follow my training plan 100% and I consider ever workout a keyworkout somehow

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd skip it, making up workouts means you'll sacrifice your other workouts quality and highly increase the chance for injury. If I miss a workout I won't make it up but if the workout's purpose is what I need to focus on at that point in the season I might change the purpose of a workout later in the week to match. Example being I missed a 30mi threshold ride tuesday, today is supposed to be a 25mi VO2max ride... I'm a ways out from any important races so I'm going to do my threshold ride today instead of the VO2max workout. |

![]() | ![]() I don't use a written, locked-in plan, preferring to sort out each day with an eye to the upcoming opportunities & goals, and the recent workload. Missing a 90 minute ride will leave you with a bit more energy to spare and make biking a slightly higher short term priority. You should probably also try to avoid affecting future key workouts like the long bike ride. Could you extend or intensify one or more of the currently scheduled bike workouts without giving up too much anywhere else? If not, don't worry about it because a little extra rest and energy wont hurt you and, especially when you are conscientious about the rest of your plan, one missed workout matters very little. |

It depends on the situation. If I can shuffle it around and make it make sense (no huge workouts back to back, recovery day appropriately placed etc) then I see if I can fit it back in. If I can't make it make sense, I just skip it. If it's a really important workout for the week, I might trade it out for another day's workout but still wind up with an extra rest day. In your case, I don't think I'd bike 4 days in a row and I don't think I'd do a longish bike (90 min is long for me) before a hard bike the next day. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Depends on the workout and what the week is like. If I can juggle things to fit it in, I do. If I can't, I'll skip it and not lose too much sleep over it. |

I just hate missing workouts as I usually follow my training plan 100% and I consider ever workout a keyworkout somehow If it makes you feel better, I follow my plan about 50% of the time since my life is far too hectic for "plan" to do a 2.5 hour ride mid week. Do the best you can. Hit your key workouts and dont sweat it. |

Missing one bike won't make or break your race. Make sure you hit the key workouts. I find the ones that are marked as recovery or easy are the easiest to skip when you need to. That said, I will also shift things around to fit what I need to get done depending on what's going on ... Best of luck! |
