Subject: is running with a bagpack bad for you?
i ran to work today! it felt good. i'm trying to fit my training into my routine. don't have much time left after work and family. i usually bike to work, but running to work is a new for me.
i usually have a laptop, my clothes, and my lunch. about 20-25 lbs. is this bad for me or my back or my joints?

I don't think it would be good for your back --- it seems like running with an additional 25 lbs on your back would mess up your gait, stride, etc.

thats a good bit of stuff you have there in that backpack.  I don't think it would be TOO bad for you.  Just depends on how far/fast  you have to get to work.  I wouldn't recommend it for everyday though.

I know they have training vests with weights in them, so same concept I guess.  But I would imagine the weight would be equal on the front and back.  Also the same with a chute.

Not sure that running would be really good on your laptop's hardrive.  I know jarring can screw then up quite a bit.

during the PCT 50 miler ( dnf ) I stupidly had a 15 lb camelback. I filled the pack with a camera, mace, phone, too many gu's, and 2 liters of water, my back was KILLING me after the race, not smart!

25 lbs will significantly increase the pounding on your joints, which seems like a good recipe for injury. 

I've heard of people running with weight vests, etc., but I believe that they tend to work up from quite low weights gradually, for precisely this reason.  (I'm not endorsing anything here -- just noting.)

I've run to or home from work before.  When I do, I plan things so that I don't have to carry anything with me.  For example, I might stay at work an extra hour to do the work that on other days I might have taken home, then leave the laptop etc. in my office. (But my bad knee can hardly take the pounding of running at all, much less with extra weight.)

I and many people did it in the Army more than we would have liked to.  I would think you are fine.  Stop if it changes your gait or you hurt.

The bouncing up and down of 20-25 lbs would be an issue for me. 

I ride my bike over a monster hill to get to work.  If I get out of the saddle to fly up the hill and let my bag bounce around, then I'm sore the next few days.  Interestingly, if I minimize the bounce with straps and sitting most of the time, I seem to do ok.  Running has a lot more bounce so I would watch the weight.

the distance is 6.5 miles. i did it in about 58 minutes or so. it didn't feel as natural of course, but not that bad. maybe the bag less the laptop will be much better.
thanks for the advice on planning ahead.

I use to do ruck run races when I was in the Army with 45 pounds and I never suffered from injury. The important part to running with a back pack is to find one thatcan be compartmentalize and keep everything as close to your body as possible. Chest and waist straps are also needed for comfort. People will tell you that running with a pack is horrible on your knees, back and shoulders so keep that in mind after you get back from your runs.

The weight is less an issue overall than this.  Or maybe the distribution of the weight.  For all those saying the extra weight in and of itself is a problem, are you suggesting that all the clydes and athenas should not run?  Some of us are carrying more than an extra 25 pounds of person on us.  Plus, like some of the military types noted, that is similar to training. 

I would think about slowing the pace a little to reduce the impact, but the damage I would worry most about is to the computer.  Unless you have one of the cool mil-spec panasonics that run around $8-10k.  Then I am jealous!

It's a problem if you try to run as much or as fast as you would without it.  You're basically adding additional stresss to your body.  Just like with running in general, as long as you build up that stress gradually then your body will adapt.  Stress it too far, too fast and you will end up injured.  Obviously, using a good pack that allows you to distribute the weight well, will help.


Edit:  And to the poster above, clydes and athenas should generally be even more careful in building their running up since they have more relative impact to their joints.  It's not that they shouldn't do it, but they should be careful to ensure their body adapts to the increased stress.  So not different, just a greater degree.

I used to run with a 10-20 lbs backpack at least twice a week.  my backpack has a belly belt as well as padded should belts.  Its alright when they adjusted correctly.

My point wasn't about the extra weight per se, but the fact that it is 'extra' compared to what OP normally runs with.  So OP's joints etc are used to a certain level of pounding, and then, all of a sudden, they are subjected to a lot more.  That's the issue, and why I suggested that building up tolerance slowly might be a good idea.

25lbs is an awful lot.

I always train with a backpack on running since I rarely run under 10 miles at a time, and I've had no problems with a Camelbak-type pack weighing up to 8.5 lbs. 25 is pushing it though.

As an IT guy, I have to agree with Shortyy. A single drop on the ground can destroy a hard drive, running wouldn't be near the impact but I wouldn't bounce it around if you don't have to. Go ahead and run with weight if you feel comfortable, just leave the laptop. =)

I know this isn't what you had in mind, but I run to/from work once a week (a hilly 13 miler). I plan ahead so that I don't have to carry anything. E.g., if I run to work, the day before I'll take my lunch & clothes. If I run home, I'll leave my stuff at work & take it home the next day. It's all in the logistics for me.
