Subject: tri-ing with an ipod
I enjoy my ipod during my run training, how many guys use an ipod during race day for the run, or am I crazy.  I just enjoy my music an it helps me stay focused.  Any thoughts, I know it my cost a couple seconds in T2 but I am not so worried about that right now.
Thanks in advance.

NCTS (and most other series) do not allow ipods during races.  It may help you get through the event, but it is a hazard to you and others, in their eyes.

ipods are bad...mmmmkay?

you should get used to running and trainin w/o music assistance. a lot of run events are also outlawing the ipod , just like the tri events

They definitely give penalties for it...as I've looked at the penalty sheets sometimes. In running races, they tolerate it, but not in Tri's. That said, I always use an mp3 player on my training rides and runs. I don't miss it in races. I'm too busy busting a$$!

I don't like coming up on other cyclists who are using ipods.  My friend and I were out yesterday on Shearon Harris Road, kicking it pretty good, and we came up on a female cyclist (who was riding strong).  We were over 26mph, about to overtake her, and my friend called out "on your left".  She never heard us-only saw us as we were passing her-and she almost ran off the road she was so startled.  THAT's why I don't like folks using them-it takes away one of their most valuable senses in cycling, hearing!

Wow, I had no idea, only use it on the runs, need my ears on the bike too much, traffic and such.  Good to know, thanks again.

From the USAT Rulebook:

8. Headphones:

Headphones, headsets, walkmans, ipods, mp3 players, or personal audio devices, etc. are not to be carried or worn at any time during the race.

Penalty:

Variable time penalty

I don't use them on group rides. I do use them riding solo. I only have one earphone on, and it's not too loud. I can hear cars approaching and people talking to me.

The triangle tri prohibited them during the ride, but was silent about the run. I saw at least two people with them during the run.

On the days that I don't carry mine and during races I hit that groove where I hear my playlist in my head and it carries me right on through.

If you see a slow fat guy running at the First in Flight race singing Kings of Leon or Sunny Ledford, just smile and run past me....thanks again for the advice.
