Subject: Rest/ Sleep vs HTFU
So I have been posting about some shin splints and my training issues.  I have sort of a sub issue not related to the actual shin splints...

I have been swimming and biking more.  I bike longer, and it is fine.  The swim combined with the bike (add in a 1 year old and a pregnant wife) and I am suffering from lack of sleep.

This morning, I was scheduled for the swim.  Local pool open swim hours are from 5:30-8.  I have to be at work by 8, so... Im in the water at 5:30.  I AM EXHAUSTED! I just could not wake up and get into the pool.  I have pushed through this before, and during the week, I can deal... but by Sunday, Im just drained....

I am run down, and legit tired, is it better to skip an early morning workout, maybe push harder on the bike that evening, or just HTFU?

You know your body. If you are completely exhausted- sleep. I think our bodies tell us when we need some more rest... and when they do, we should listen.

x2.  Living with sleep deprivation is not HTFU, it is just self-torture and a good way to get sick or hurt.

I will be very direct here. There is no amount of fitness your body will absorb at this point. Unless you are getting "enough" sleep and rest to allow for a recovery, you are only digging a deeper hole. Google the "fitness curve" and you will understand what I am reffering to.
I am no expert or a coach, but I can say this with confidence, that you maybe checking a box of going trough the workout and accomplishing only the volume part of it. The quality of your workouts is what ultimately is going to affect your fitness. In a condition you are now as you are describing, so called an "over reaching" state, you are step away from overtraining. Wright now your mind is telling you I need rest, your body is telling you trough slugishness, heavy feeling in legs, slower paces.....that it needs rest. Next sign that will come if you ignore current state is illness or injury.......
Sleep=Rest=Recovery is an essential component of one's plan. If you are not recovering adequately, you should consider scaling the volume back in order to achieve balance with quality/recovery and the rest of your life.
I am coming here from my personal experience.
I did not peek into your loggs to see what you are doing, but take this and research it further. Hope this helps.

: 0 )

Thanks.  If only I had thought of that.

Sorry, like I said, Im legit tired and therefore grumpy. Im usually good for 10 pm bedtime on weeknights... If getting more sleep was as easy as going to bed earlier, I would be in bed at 5 pm... but life does seem to get in the way of my sleeping/ training.  I seem to recover after one or two days of "sleeping in" until 6:30 or 7 am (depending on the baby's agenda).

I just wonder if I push through, if my body will adjust.  It has been a few months, and it is no easier.  It is easier if the sun is shining... but days are getting shorter now... ungh!

Maybe it's the 50 hour swim session you did on Friday.  That's enough to tire a superhero

HTFU is getting 6 hours of sleep one night and forcing yourself get up earlier for your scheduled workout. HTFU is being sore but still completing a workout knowing your plan calls for rest at some point.

Sleep deprevation is not HTFU and without sleep you won't recover and see any fitness gains.

Re-evaluate what is important and what your goals are, look at the scheduling in your life, work with your wife to find a way to meet your goals. (provided your goals are obtainable).

As your kids grow up and become more independant adjust accordingly.

You need to catch up on your sleep regularly.  I didn't ride or run yesterday for fear of falling on my face I was so tired.   Skipped again this morning in favor of sleep.  Feeling back to normal and ready to work out tonight. I will almost always choose a decent night's sleep over anything.  A half-a$$ed workout is a waste of time, imo.

  • ..I am suffering from lack of sleep.

  • The way I look at it is that when I'm sleeping is when I'm actually improving. I sleep at least 8 hours per night. I don't know for sure because it doesn't apply to me but it seems to me that if your schedule doesn't allow you sufficient sleep then some part of your training is going to be a waste of time since your body will not be able to recover properly.

FWIW I use the 5 minute rule.
There are days I just don't want to drag my formerly large butt out of bed but I do.
My stuff is already in the car and I hit the Gym. I begin my work out and give it 5-10 minutes, If I can't get into at that point I call it a day, 99% of the time I am motivated by the time I hit the locker room door.
Your body knows what it needs, it is not a matter of HTFU

At the beginning of July, I was really fatigued and fighting off a cold. I tried to get that last run in and finish the week (HTFU, right), and now I'm trying to get over a nice calf injury as a result. Use that for what it's worth... just rest a little - it's not worth hurthing yourself.

I have some similar issues as you, although my son's 4 now, my work schedule says that I'm up at 5:15 every morning in the week.  I'm left with the choice of 2 hours of adult time after my son goes to sleep at 8 or a good nights sleep.  By Saturday I'm exhausted and after my morning ride, I'll nap on the couch until someone wakes me (usually my energetic and wide awake son).

In these conditions I need to be realistic about my workouts.  I will readily dump the endurance type workouts and save myself for the quality workouts in each sport.

So when I am in need of some extra sleep I should focus on 1) getting the sleep and just do a  shorter but high quality (high intensity) session vs the LONG swim/bike/run session that wipes me out?

I feel like that will limit me pretty quickly.  Like my grandad used to say, "Thats the breaks"  meaning, that's life kid... I know I can FINISH a sprint... but Im not content to just finish... not just yet anyway.

Thanks everyone for your input.  As we speak, I am gearing up for a long ride tonight... I DID sleep in this morning afterall!

there is a thread around here to the tune of

"HTFU is ... HTFU is not...."

like ^^ said, HTFU is getting up early when you don't want to
HTFU is NOT pushing through sleep deprivation. get some rest, dude

I'm not suggesting that you substitute your endurance sessions for speed or threshold sessions, you should already have these quality sessions scheduled into your week.  I'm suggesting you know which of your workouts for this week are quality sessions and prioritize accordingly.

Unfortunately, part of life is choosing your priorities.

Hopefully this won't color your opinion, but.... if it was me, with a 1 year old and another on the way, I would not be engaged in an activity that took me away from my family as much as triathlon can. Kids are only kids for a short time; my babies are 21 and 23.

I have 1,4,7 YO kiddos. You just have to accept you will not be able to do everything you want to everytime. I have had to skip workouts because i was up with the baby for an hour at 3 A or the kids didnt go to sleep till 10 P. Dont neglect the wife either. Family-sleep-work-training is my order. Lack of sleep makes all the other three bad in some way or another. I would like to do a 140.6  but I am stretching to hit 6-10 hrs a week training and I just know I cant committ to something like that now. Just set limits for yourself and try to kick within your boundries. I race against me because there isnt an age division for 34 YO men with three kids under seven who work in an oncology clinic and pull call twice a week whose wife also wants to do things outside of the house.

HTFU. Definitely. But that doesn't mean go with lack of sleep. Do what it takes to get your life in order so you can achieve your goals, and not at the expense of family time. Sounds easy-

I checked a book out of the library: Time-saving training for multisport athletes / Rick Niles.  Check it out and see if that helps you balance family, work, training and sleep.

All great posts!  As a newbie, and a newly turned "grown up" (like I'll ever really grow up) Im still learning how to prioritize.  One reason I started this was because I was fatter than ever, and my lab results from bloodwork were terrible... I wanted to be healthy for my family... now Im finding the opposite is true, Im in (better) shape, but I am tired and away from them more.

Next year I will cut a few things out (baseball on Sunday probably) so I have a full weekend with the fam.

In the short term, I think I ll go hard through Sept. 12th, the date of the tri I started this whole thing to do, and then back it off for awhile.

I went for a long ride tonight, and while it was nice, it was very slow and I did not get much benefit.  Looks like I should have stuck to the 5 min rule and headed home for play time, and early bed.

There are some places where it's easy to fit training in, but people don't frequently look there.  Do you commute to work by car?  Can you take the bike in some days and make it a training ride.  That's probably an hour that you can take back.  What about lunch?  Can you eat at your desk and run or swim on your break?  What about trading with your SO for "me" time?  A couple hours one day a week where you alone watch the kid in exchange for a couple hours on another day where you work on your health so you can be there to meet your great grandkids?  Nap with the kids!  <- I'm convinced this is the secret to raising young kids and remaining sane.

My biggest challenge is finding a way to get to a decent pool during open hours...  I might need to lower my idea of decent.

My commute is doable, except ir REQUIRES a stint on a major highway, or else I double the distance.  I would be OK with the distance, but there are no locker rooms at work and i SWEAT LIKE A Wh0R# in Church!  Same problem at lunch, plus, my job is very pace driven, so even though Im not paid for it, I rarely take a break anyway.  I try to work out on the weekends when the kid naps, that way they do not miss me.  I like the idea of trading off time with my wife though!  Especially since she is getting motivated to get back to active (now that she is beyond morning sickness and all day tiredness)

Sorry if that sounds like a bunch of whining and excuse making.
