Pre-race routine:

Arrived on site at 7:40AM, registered. Met Trix, Dana and Jen! Woo Hoo!!

It is sooo cool racing with fellow BT'ers!!

THE MICHIGAN MAFIA IS FRICKIN' FAST!! NUFF SAID!
Event warmup:

Did an easy jog with the Trixster!
Run
  • 20m 51s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

My plan was to take the first 5K out EASY (low 7's) and save my energy for the bike and closing 5K. My first mile split was 6:10! Doh! I felt good, so I stayed with it. More surprising was that after a mile I was WAY back in the pack. I made up ground though over the closing 2 miles...
What would you do differently?:

This was my first du... so I really don't know!
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Not fast, that is for sure...
Bike
  • 36m 34s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 20.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Since I went faster than anticapted on the run, I held back a bit on the bike to save energy and regroup for the final 5K. I pushed it...but I refrained from going into the BIG gear. Not sure if this was the right move or not! Several competitors passed me in the first few miles. Then I pedaled sole FOREVER before "the pack" caught me near the end. Again, not sure of strategy... although the last two miles I was definitely biking on fumes.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Solid.
Run
  • 21m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

This was the HIGHLIGHT of the race for me. My recent brick work and mary training really helped here. I came out of transition at near full speed and just kept on building! I reeled in competitors and moved up at LEAST 12 slots during the run! Man, I ran hard and persevered! I about died when I crossed the finish line. Three or four people whom I passed on the closing run stopped to compliment me after they finished! VERY cool!

What would you do differently?:

PERFECT.

However, I'm not sure what it says for me when my second 5K split was almost as fast as my first 5K.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

BIKING, BIKING, BIKING.I need CLIPS!! A solid bike split would have put me in medal contention for my AG.

The race was SUCH a RUSH. I quickly remembered why I *love* multi sport racing as opposed to simply "running". Besides that, RACING IS MORE ADDICTIVE THAN CRACK!

I exceded most of my goals. Cool. Last year I was MOP'er, borderline BOP'er. Now I'm a FOP'er! Woo Hoo!! Heck, last year my best run split was 7:45! I BLEW THAT AWAY TODAY! Best bike split last year? 20 EVEN at the END of the season. Lookin' good!

And to think there was no swim. THAT has me stoked!

I finished a SECOND out of 6th for my AG. Damn!

Event comments:

3D racing had disappointed me in the past, but they did a fine job today!

GREAT race Greg!  You are FAST!   And if you can do that this early in the season, then LOOK OUT for the rest of your races!  Awesome.

Wow.  I've heard that Du's were more competitive than triathlons, and your race report is proof positive.  You are incredibly fast.  In most triathlons, you would have won outright with those times.  I can only dream of running 6 sub-7 minute miles.  Unreal.  Maybe I'll be asking Trixie for some speed training!

Absolutely!  I'd love to be in the same ballpark with my second run.  FANTASTIC RACE, GREG!
