Pre-race routine:

I was planning on doing this race all summer as it was my 2nd ever tri. The Misses signed up to after we found out we can't do PP becasue of a 92 year old Grandma's birthday on that day. So we got to hire a baby sitter and had a race date which turned into dinner at Charro's (downtown Milwaukee) for XXX wings, chicken enchiladas and several miller lites, then to Phantom of the Opera (which is awesome if I might add) home and in bed by Midnight.

Woke up before at 4:40 AM before alarm. Made some MM Pancakes with peanut butter, woke up T, loaded up the car and off for a nice Sunday drive. The weird thing about this race is it doesn't start til 8:00 so wheels out it is already getting light outside so you feel like your running late.
Event warmup:

Who needs much of a warm up when its one of the hotter and muggier days of the year? Most of the pre-race warm-up consisted of the merits/pros & cons of wearing a wetsuit in such warm conditions.

Transitions setup was quick except for walking back and forth between the two 3 or 4 times. Spent the rest of the time smack talking with the Donks (Terri, Scoobs, Joe, Lara, JimWebs,JDM, Ross(hole, Force, Scotty, and new guy kbreitz) and anyone else that will listen to my mindless drivel. Heard some rumors that CB and RR had words before the race.

As for actual warm-up, the heat of the sun on my wetsuit warmed me up quite nicely (actually it was stickin hot.
Swim
  • 10m 5s
  • 528 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started on the far right on the outside - this has been my strategy as of late and has typically worked well - nice clear sailing but had to fight the weeds bit time as I was a bit off the main path thru the water. Cleared up after 100 yds or so. No incidences to speak of (sort of a boring swim - how often does that happen?) Swall all the way until my hand hit sand - took 2 steps and I was out of the water. In '07 I mdae the mistake of trying to stand 20 feet from shore and couldn't touch bottom and ended up drinking lots of water.

3:17 better than '07 (but I only did breast stroke then)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I was very happy with this swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Pretty ueventful. These transition areas are like so luxurios and spacious that it so easy to get done what needs to be done.

Same exact time as '07
What would you do differently?:

Learn to bike without socks - just a chicken to try cuz of my sensitive baby feet. Alos, next year I vow to learn a flying bike mount with my shoes clipped in.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 9s

Comments:

Plan was to go out nice and steady the first half and pick it up the second half. Mounted bike and took off down the hill and heard this clicking sound. Oh great, whats wrong. Gave a quick look and everything seemed good. Caught up to Lara and we both got bottlenecked on the first little hill by someone going slooowww and taking up most of the path. Heard someone mumble something about the left and realize it'st there bike making all this clicking noise, so I stepped on it to try and pass the slow lady and move over, who comes by but Joe - I should have know it was his bike making that racket from our training rides. Chatted for a few seconds and he was gone. saw Scoobs on the first long downhill. The rest of the ride was pretty smooth, except for the wind, which was difficult to get a handle on seemed to change directions all the time. Only passed by Joe and some dude on a rocket ship that passed me like I was standing still, if you can do that on a bike.

1:28 slower than '07 but the course was 2 miles shorter that year because of road construction.
What would you do differently?:

More biking and more hills. Otherwise I was quite pleased with this.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Force was at the entrance to T2 giving out lots of Donkey love. Took it easy on the run down the hill, racked bike, shoes off, sat down to put on running shoes, grabbed hats and number and was off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Second fastest t2 in age group.
Run
  • 23m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Took me all of 15 seconds to figure out the gatorade I decide to use on the bike was bad news, as I felt bloated. Burped a few times (some chunks but nothing major so I missed that goal) took some water and that seemed to help cool things down. It was so d@@m hot today, I ended up walking all the aid stations. Hit a couple of the sprinklers that people has so niceley laid out on the course. Got to see lots of Donks on the way out and back in which helped me keep moving in the heat. Force was strategically placed at the top of the last hill yelling words of encouragement which was big help, thanks Jeff.
What would you do differently?:

Carry fuel belt so I don't walk the water stations. NO more gatorade on the bike - must order more Infinit.
Post race
Warm down:

Found some water and drank a bunch while cooling down. Then went and joined Joe and Jeff at the top of "the hill" to encourage the other donks (and other people as well). Went and got some good grub and waited while a whole bunch of hardware was picked up.

Got to see and cheer on an 86 year old lady with a big smile finishing. Man I hope I have that mojo at that age.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat and wind

Event comments:

I really enjoy this race and it is definitely for a good cause. It is well run, close to home and has a very intimate feel to it - not to mention some of the best food.

Yeah, thanks for yelling at me too.  Cool to hear your trademark cough as I was coming out of the woods.  I knew you were there.  Thanks for the high five and a good day of racing.  Neato bandito to be in your same wave.  Great job out there.
