I can sooooo agree with many of the pet peeves in the other thread. But I like to balance any negative thoughts with positive stuff.

- Volunteers that cheer you through the aid station.

- Well marked courses.

- Cheering spectators. Especially the folks who cheer for every racer, not just their person.

- Hearing my name announced to the crowd as I cross the finish line!

- Some of the interesting views on the bike/run course. At Ice Breaker, we rounded a corned and came out into an immense field of blooming lupine. Beautiful.

- The electricity in the air before the swim.

- Racers who encourage other racers with a quick "good job" or something similar, even while passing.

- How racers will actually offer help to someone with a problem (flat tire, cramp, anxiety in the swim, etc.).

- Did I mention the volunteers? We wouldn't have a race to participate in if it weren't for the volunteers.

- And on a personal note, how my BF will almost always walk the run course backwards to meet up with me, and run the rest of the way in with me (after he's finished already, of course).

All of the above! All of the above!! Can't wait for racing season...

- A bay that looks like a mill pond at 7.00am with fine weather to come.
- A near perfect transition
- The volunteers that take off my timing band after crossing the finishing line,
I could hug them.
- The right to feel proud of myself for doing something I never thought I'd do
(and managing to stick with it).
- The anticipation of getting my times and seeing improvements
- Watching how the pros do it

Some more positives

A well marked swim course with Big Buoys
Creative body markers
Roomy transition areas
Long downhills after tough bridges
An elusive tailwind
Seeing my wife and knowing she is safe and not whipping me too bad

Want to only mention one b/c it deserves it's own place in this thread.

In a 1/2 ironman in Sylvan Lake, AB, Canada the temp was in the high 30's by the time the run started. At one of the water stations in the middle of the highway with no shade, a family entertained, encouraged, supported, consoled for the entire race. They cheered and supported everyone with the same enthusiasm from start to finish. It was a two lap run and everyone was commenting on the family after. Mom, Dad, 2 boys (about 7 & 10) and one girl (about 9). It was amazing!!

I love seeing kids with signs that say, "Go Daddy/Mommy!" I love that littel kids are being exposed to this lifestyle and that they see the results of hard work, and pride and family and healthy competition, and .. I could cry!"

Driving to a fairly local race at 5:30 in the morning and sharing the road only with cars with bikes racked on the roof, on the back, in the truck bed ...

I've only done one so far so this includes 5K's too:
- Being around enthusiastic, determined people who are, for the most part, friendly, encouraging and just as excited as me

- Volunteers, volunteers, volunteers

- Local law enforcement doing a great job helping keep the racers safe

- The people who live along the race route who come out, put up lawn chairs, and enjoy the festivities at 8:00 in the morning. Seeing people not involved with the race out along the route cheering is awesome.

- At the tri: seeing Cervelo, Orbea, Felt and other bike porn in real life for the first time (hey, I don't get out much). Getting stuck in traffic with people headed in to the same race.

BLING BLING!

Lots of good food at the finish, maybe a band.

None of this is necessary, but sometimes you like to get a little something extra for your $35-$100+ entry fee. The big local triathlon gave you a coolmax shirt, a Headsweats cap, a nylon gear bag, a pair of SockGuy socks, a coozie, a towel, and two gels, all for the $50 entry fee.

Mile markers on the bike and run course. The run is fairly standard, but you don't see it often on a long bike because its a lot of work. In a 1/2 IM its really great to see the miles count down to the finish.

Hearing all the chips beep at the start of the race (other than Tri, obviously) EXCITING!

First sounds of chips & announcer when I can't yet see the finish line YEAH!!

Spectators along the course who set out radios & stereos to give us some music THANKS

little kids on the run course with their hands out to HIGH FIVE

young people in general racing (what a great habit to start) even though they're faster than me

smiling for the photographers (esp when you round a bend and there's one)

Hearing words of encouragement from someone I'm passing. That one really took me by surprise.

Seeing families race together.

The commraderie of all the athletes.

A pat on the back or a "good job" as I get left in the dust

See my family anywhere on the course.  A huge emotional lift.

Enthusiatic volunteers

Cheering supporters

Awesome volunteers

Well marked course

Race director knows what's going on

I love seeing entire families out in support

Great food and beer at the end

Great finisher's medals

Also...I love the fact that if you are having problems in a race, another racer comes up to you and gives you the much needed support

And...my favorite thing, and this happened in one marathon I was running...I was running with this one guy and he had both his knees wrapped up. He was having some problems, but he kept going. I crossed the finish line about 15 minutes ahead of him, but when he was heading into the home stretch, two of his kids ages 3 and 4 ran along side of him and said to him "Daddy you can do it. You're at the finish line. Way to go Daddy." That is one of my favorite race moments.

Ohhhhhh, that sounds like a sweet race.  I get tired of paying $75 and getting a cotton t-shirt with an ugly design, and plastic bag full of coupons for places I'm not going to go to.  Why pray tell do I need a refrigerator magnet for a dentist in Florida when I'm from NY?  Besides my fridge is stainless steel and those magnets don't stick to it.

The amazing people who encourage you as you pass them, or as they pass you.

I don't look like an athlete. And I saw so many people who wouldn't fit that "ideal" as well, including a woman who was at least 150 pounds overweight, people missing limbs, grandmas and grandpas, mentally challenged..... yet they were there, on the trail, going.

Inspiring.

This is a sport about a strong heart, strong soul and strong mind and the enduring power to keep moving forward. I was so inspired by the wonderful people I raced with on the trail.

- adding to the swim cap, t-shirt, & water bottle collections
- show bag
- free massage!
- door prizes!
- catching up with the next wave on the swim (this is still a huge personal victory)
- helping racers who need some pacing on the run (last race last season I ran the last mile with a 16-yr-old girl doing her first tri, struggling to maintain her pace)
- eating a good meal after and collapsing
- my little boy bragging to everyone how fast his mama is (whether I am or not)

Why pray tell do I need a refrigerator magnet for a dentist in Florida when I'm from NY?

I'm guessing you 'need' that magnet because the dentist is helping to support the sport you love!

Amen! I love each and every t-shirt covered with logos, too, even though I almost never wear t-shirts (even when I workout).

How lame am I that this thread is making me tear up and get SO excited for the season?
Few of my MANY likes:
a) of course, the volunteers. They make such a big difference. They are definitely not thanked enough
b) getting bodymarked. For some reason, I just feel so tough when those are put on
c) the excitement and almost audible hum in the air before the start of the race. I still get those butterflies in my stomach before we start
d) watching people finish their races for the first time. Pure joy and sometimes agony mixed; absolutely beautiful thing no matter how old they are, what distance they finished, or what shape they are in.
