I was just wondering everyone's thoughts on using a Fuel Belt during an HIM.  Mine is coming up Sept. 27 in Augusta.  I assume it is going to be hot and humid.  My initial thoughts are yes, but didn't know if anyone thought differently.  I have the four 8oz bottles.  I usually fill two with GE and two with water.  I currently use it for my long training runs so I figured why change on race day?

Its not unusual. I've seen many people do this. I personally do not prefer it, but you will not be the only one if you do it.

Carry one if you want, but you probably don't really need to. It looks like your doing an Ironman branded 70.3 race, and I think you will find plenty of aid stations on the run. Chances are by the time you get to your fuel belt in T2, whatever you have in there is going to be kind of warm, anyway.... I'd personally prefer a nice cold drink from tha aid stations! At my last HIM I did carry a small gel flask clipped to my race belt, 'cause I wanted to use gels I was used to, and I like to water 'em down a little bit. I didn't feel the need to carry any liquid, though. If it gives you a sense of security, carry it, but like I said.... probably not necessary.

I find I do not get enough liquids down when only grabbing cups through aid stations, so planning on wearing one for my 70.3 this weekend. I train wearing a fuel belt at least once per week for my long runs-so it's comfortable for me. I plan to fill it with 2 8oz frozen bottles of 1st Endurance drink and 1 flask of 1st endurance gel (400 cals), then have Saltstick pills in the pouch. I also plan on grabbing water in the aid stations.

I carry mine for HIM or longer. For a HIM that will be well supported with aid stations, I'll only carry one, maybe 2 bottles, and they will be empty when I start running.

Sometimes I'll fill the bottles at aid stations if I decide that I want to "sip" on the run rather than gulp at every aid station. There are other times when I haven't used the bottles at all and lived off the aid stations. But it still was nice to have the option of doing it either way.

Like another poster said, I'll also carry a gel flask on my belt for "my" preferred gel. Now, it is a bit dorky, but I don't really care.

I say if you train with a FB and are used to it wear it.

If you do not train with one, dont wear it.

There are a ton of aid stations during a Ironman 70.3 race so you rarely go a mile without a chance to get a drink.  Many time they are long enough to get two or three cups of water if you need it.

Why carry the extra weight.  This will only slow you down.

I would recommend finding out from the RD what will be served on course at the aid stations and train with that.  Don't carry extra weight and special product (unless you really have unique special needs) and use what they give you.

Most HIM's have aid stations every mile on the run so there is an abundance of stuff on the course to graze off.

I agree. I wore one during my first HIM run and I regretted it. Didn't like carrying the extra weight at all and there were plenty of aid stations so it was unnecessary.

I vote no on the fuelbelt.  I come from a marathon background.  You will find that the run aid stations/support for a 70.3 race is a lot better than any standalone half marathon.  I'm just not talking about sports drink and water.  I'm talking about flat cokes, gels, ices, fruits, spunges, and much more.  They come at every mile and they are not as crowded as a standalone 13.1 run or marathon.  Why add the extra weight ?

Remember that by the time that you get to your pre-prepared frozen drink, you are looking at 3-5hours of that drinking sitting in the open air.  It would have melted by the time that get to it.  The only way for it not to melt is if you stored it in a small cooler at the transition area.  You are not running a standalone marathon that starts at 7-8 AM.  By the time that you get to the run portion, you are looking at a time when the sun has out long enough to melt anything that you may have frozen.

I've used a 2 bottle belt during a shorter long course (with 15k run) because I knew I could run hard the whole way and drinking dribbling water out of little cups while running is not something I like to do.  During my HIM I knew it was going to be hot and I planned to walk the aid stations after 2-3 miles, which I have no issue drinking while walking and taking in there goodies.

But you know what, to each there own.  If it's a two loop course perhaps you could dump the belt with family along the way if its bothersome.

I have used mine, and probably will again, or a hand held bottle. I hate stopping at aid stations, I like to drink whenever I want to drink, I like to drink whatever I want to drink, I don't get enough from trying to sip out of a cup on the run (cause I'm not stopping if I don't have to), and I trained that way.  Like was said, to each their own, but I simply froze my bottles the day before and they were still somewhat cool by the time I got to the run.  It allowed me to grab water at aid stations and dump it on my head and then I could drink whenever I wanted.  Just personal preference, and you'll see people do it both ways, so just come up with your plan and stick to it!

Looks like they will have them a frequent locations (being 2 laps helps).  Miles 1.5, 3, 4, 6, 6.5, 8, 9.5.11, 12.5  Aid stations will have water and Gatorade.  If you need supplementary fluids then maybe the belt would help.

This is how I look at it:

Reasons to wear fuelbelt: 1) pass people at aid stations 2) drink whenever you want 3) drink what you want 4) no litter 5) easier to get liquids in you using a bottle rather than a cup.

Reasons not to: 1) weight

I'm wearing my fuelbelt in my marathon.  Didn't wear it at the tris I did this summer because I walked the aid stations in my HIM and the RD composted all the cups.

I haven't figured out how to drink from a paper cup while running, without splashing liquid all over my face.  So I wear a fuel belt with one 8 oz bottle on HIMs and HMs.

The fuel belt relieves me of the problem the gatoraid-all-over-the-face problem.  I also like to know how much I drink during a race which I can't very well calculate when trying to drink from a paper cup.  I'll racewalk during an aid station when I need to fill up the bottle.

It's entirely up to you. I wouldn't want the extra weight and a lot of people walk through the aid stations which makes drinking out of the cups easier than if you are running. I saw several discarded fuel belts on the run course of the last IM I did.

I debated the same thing for my first HIM this summer and choose to use it so I could drink whenever I wanted/needed. We didn't have a lot of hot weather to train in until the last few weeks before the HIM - and what a difference being well hydrated made in the heat/training - so figured it would be import for me during the race event as well.  Glad I had it too - the last aid station near the turn around point (so we hit this one twice with no other aid stations in between) ran out of cups ... lots of fluid but only those of us with their own bottles could drink.

However, my goals were more about 'completing' than 'competing' - so I choose comfort over potential loss of time/speed, which included leaving the bottles on ice at transition and taking the minute to put them into my fuel belt so they would be cold (and it was sure a nice treat to have it the icy bottles on my body after the bike and to have COLD drinks!). There were more people without fuel belts than with them though.
