ok this is last minute advice, i'm well aware.

I just walked the 1 mile from work to home, and I am sweating my butt off! I had a 20 mile run planned for tonight, but with 88 degree temp and weather.com telling me it feels like 94 out, I just don't know if I can stomach the thought of running my long run tonight.

am I being a wimp? other than it being uncomfortable, would there be any negative effects of doing my long run anyway?

If it's hot on race day, are you not going to do it?

As long as you are careful and hydrate and it's on your plan and you've smartly worked your way up to the distance, only reason not to do it is you don't want to

I will say that long midweek runs suck

I did 9.5miles in the same heat at 4pm - I ended up in Zone 4 55% of the run at a minute/per mile slower than I normally would have run. So....I did it - and had a painful run. Should you do it -probably - are you being a wimp - nope. I feel ya. Can you do it first thing in the morning?

haha well I realized after reading the responses that I was looking for an excuse out of it. But good points were made, and I'm actually feeling better about the run now.... plus this 20 miler is part of my Chicago Marathon training plan, and based on the weather for that race the past couple of years, I better prepare myself in case that trend continues this year!!

so thank you, and I'll put my running shoes on! (and pack some dollar bills for buying alot of water during the run!)

oh and I thought about running in the morning- however, I wouldn't feel safe doing that. I live in downtown Philly, and would have to be out of the house by 4 am to get my run in before work  Unfortunately, there are some shady characters out at 4 am!! Actually there are some pretty scary people no matter what time of day, but at least I can see them ahead of time when its light out :-)

I live at the beach and whimper when I have to run and the temp is near 80.  Way to suck it up and go!  How was it?

Hope you had a good run.  I was out at 6:00 pm and it was 91 degrees, 70% humidity, then it started raining.  Got in my 12 miler.  Soaking wet.  Rainy, then super humid, then pain.  Way to suck it up!

I can only dream of a run in such cool temperature's. Try running in 102 temps with a 105-108 heat index every stinkin day for the last 2 months.

I can't wait for fall/winter training.

I run everyday here in southeast Texas where at 2 pm it is close to 100 easy.  Makes you tougher and just remember, if you can run in the heat, you can easily run in the morning when most races happen.
Way to push thru.

Hope you had a good run...you could do 20 on the treadmill instead of the heat..which is a better option?

well I'm not going to lie and say it was the most fun I've ever had, but I got my 20 miles in and I'm so glad I did! Now I won't have this hanging on my conscience all weekend. Thank you for the motivation everyone!!

I  hydrated every 2 miles (both drinking water and pouring it on my head), and I took a couple of gels with me. I ran the first 15 outside. It was brutal! It was dark at that point so I stopped at my gym and  ran 1.5 miles on the treadmill, then got ancy (i HATE the treadmill)and ran 2 miles outside, and then finished up the last 1.5 on the treadmill. So I cheated a little by running those 3 miles on the treadmill, but that AC DID feel good! It was still 86, and felt like 90, when I got done.

I don't know how people living in the south deal with this weather on a regular basis!
But anyway- once again- THANK YOU for the motivation!!  And i REALLY hope Chicago has cooler weather this year. :-)

Hey, it was in the mid-80s for the run on my IM in northern California earlier this month...and we were all thrilled that it was so cool.

I'm not sure you ever "get used to" high temps, but around here they do become something you know you have to deal with on a regular basis so you have to have strategies for the heat or you'd never have any continuity to your training.
