jpitkin - 2009-08-27 10:04 AM Bikes are female because they're expensive and make us suffer... and we can't live with out 'em.

Plus to keep them happy, you have to keep spending money on them.

My bike's a machine, a tool designed for a specific purpose, inanimate unless I propel it. It has neither gender nor a name.

x3, or whatever.

And no matter how sweet your own ride is, you can't help lusting after other rides.

Spoken like a true Vulcan!  :-)

Why do we name bikes?  "For God's sake Andrew, I'm a triathlete not a philosopher!"

kaiserman19 - 2009-08-27 12:35 PM Because my bike is sexy and sleek.

Men have female bike names and women have male bike names.  Makes it less weird to have your bike as your mistress.

Umm......no........not necessarily. My P2C is DEFINITELY a girl. I just call her sexy girl......cause she is.

my bike and car are both female (June and Kate, if you are being informal with them) but i've have a male car in the past (Travis)

i just get a "sense" that they are one or the other.  no reason really.

I am this way too. My TT bike is a boy (Sir Velo) and my roadie is a girl (Rosie). They are who they are (and I found it difficult to think of a pink & white bike with hearts on it as a dude).

Do you have to look under the bottom bracket to tell if you've got a boy or a girl bike?

Not unless you buy it 2 or 3 accessories first...

Ha, I was just thinking the same thing!

I have never been one to use gender on material things.

LMAO!!!!!!

My bike is female, her name is Lady.  I also believe in Santa Clause and the concept that common courtesy should still be a common occurance.

My mountain bike is a guy, and my pretty new roadie is a chick. She's all tomboy, and if she wore baseball caps she'd wear one backwards and make my stomach do a little flippity-flop thing. My mountain bike is definitely a guy, he is awfully jealous of the new chick, he likes to get muddy and filthy, sulks when he has to go on the road, but is having lots of fun doing my commutes with me in the middle of the night.

Neither one has told me their names. That's okay, I'm patient.

I don't name my bikes, cars, mowers, shoes or anything like that.  They already have names that work out OK for me:

Trek, 1500, 2.1, Mystic
Chevy Duramax, Toyota Sienna
Areons
Mizuno

Also, I don't talk to them either.  Not sure why, I just don't ever say a word directly to my bike, cars, mower or shoes.  Funny now that I think actually about it.

smalls82 - 2009-08-27 11:20 AM If you look far enough back, women were not allowed to sail, so the ship was the mistress of the sailors. I believe the same basically goes with cars, and it has just carried over.

I have heard that and One other reason I heard back when I was in the Coast Guard when talking about our Cutters and small boats; was, that like a woman you are in a relationship with you have to take care of her and treat her right or she will leave you (break down).

Makes sense to me even with our bikes, if you don’t maintain her she will break down and leave you stuck on the side of the road.
