I have pretty severe toenail fungus and am not a candidate for the oral medicine due to some pre-existing conditions. I've tried topical solutions and they don't work. There's a new laser removal, but as far as I can see, there is no real objective proof that it works, but I'm pretty desperate.

This is a loooong shot, but does anyone know someone who's had this treatment, or knows anyone who administers it? It aint cheap, $800-1000, but I'm more than willing to pay for it if I knew it would work.

Try putting vicks on your infected toe nails for several weeks.  I put it on every night for 6 weeks and now as the toenail is growing out, it isn't infected anymore.

I am not a home remedy type person, but if you check the web you will see this all over the place.

^^^^^^ x2 on the Vicks!

Scrubbing them hard with a brush each time you bath helps too.

Have your toenails removed and then pee on them several times per day (maybe even while biking or running).

Wow- My Big toenail on my right foot has fungus (grows thicker and the ends split).  My daughter calls it my Ogre Toe.

I mentioned it to my family doctor but when he mentioned some of the side effects of the oral medecine I opted not to get them.

I'll give this Vicks remedy a try.

If you don't have liver problems, Lamisil is fairly affective and is generally well-tolerated for toe-nail fungi.

White vinegar applied to the base of the toe with a Q-tip, works too. You have to do it twice a day, religiously, for ~6 months for it to work.

Sunlight will get rid of toenail fungus. Get a tan on your feet and see if it helps.

Lamisil worked for me. I have heard good things about Vick's as well as soaking them twice daily in hot water with Epsom Salts.  The vinegar can be added to the Epsom salt soaks to kill pseudomonas.

Peeing on your feet...I've heard people say it works, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.
Sunlight may indeed kill fungus with direct exposure...the problem is that the fungus is not just ON the toenail it's in the capillaries and nail bed, that's why most topical ointments are less effective.

I don't want to take the oral meds either.  The local podiatrist sells Genetian Violet or Gypsom Violet, not sure how it's spelled.  Comes in a bottle appled topically.  It will stain the nail dark blue.  they say it takes about a year, but it will kill the fungus.  I'm going to try that, and if that doesn't work then I will just do the Lamisil.  I have already tried the Vicks 2x per day for the last 6 mos, and it hasn't worked.

I bit the bullet and did the laser treatment a few weeks ago. I have not noticed any change whatsoever, but I suspect it takes a while to tell if its effective.

+1 on white vinegar.

You have to be RELIGIOUS about it.  Morning and night.  What you are doing is killing it along the nail bed.  Skip a treatment and the infection spreads back into the bed.

Patience is a problem which is why so many people will spend the money on the expensive oral drugs.  $1 worth of vinegar will be more than enough.

If you have the willpower to workout and/or eat well, you can make yourself hit a toenail with a q-tip twice a day.

Not quick, but cheap and easy!

My dad has had nasty feet ever since I can remember. They finally got bad enough that he decided to do something about it.

He got the laser treatment a few weeks ago and he says it worked amazingly well. He had to disinfect all his socks when he got home and had to take one week worth of oral meds because his was so bad. But other than that he says it definitely worked and his feet have never looked better.

When I asked the doc about getting the pills, he STRONGLY recommended this option.  The pills may as well come with a liver replacement and the other options just plain take time.  Remove the nail and take care of the skin and it grows back normal.

I have yet to get mine done (I've got four funky nails), but when I do, this is the approach I'm taking.

I have a "thick" nail on my 2nd toe. Not fungus just "thick" tried oral meds - nothing - need to get some vicks - they think it's from friction when running

I tried a lot of the home and over the counter remidies for this with no success.  I know the OP isn't allowed to take oral meds, but like another post said, for a cheap perscription of Lamisil tablets, it went away.  Just takes a LONG time - like 6 months before they grow out (big toe)...

Out of curiosity, what is involved with toenail removal? Surgery? Sounds like it would be painful in any case.

Believe it or not.  It's not that bad.

I had a long weekend of bump skiing and turned my big toe nails black.  The new nails started to grow under them all thick and discolored and with the fungus that came with all the trauma.

It's simple process.  They shoot some local into the toe, then get a industrial nail cutter (looks like a wire cutter) and pliers and basically rip it off.  They slid a thin scredriver looking thing (VERY THIN - almost a blade) between the nail and bed to seperate it first.  (talk about bamboo under the nails torture).  I laughed when it was happening because it LOOKED like the most painful thing in the world, but I didn't feel a thing.  It makes me curl my toes thinking about it and how much is SHOULD have hurt, but it was painless.

Then basically a bandage over the exposed bed and you wear open toed shoes/sandles for a week.  The skin toughens up enough to wear shoes after that.  There is also a removal, and a permanent removal (where they take out the "engine" that makes the nail, so it can't grow back)  The doc also said that nail or no nail, or living with thick/yellow nails is all cosmetic in the long run.  We don't NEED the nails and the fungus just looks bad but won't hurt you.

The only thing I will say about that, is NOT a 100% fix.  If the fungus is deep in the bed or place where it grows, it still grows back with fungus.  It did for me on both big nails.

Lamisil tablets were the only thing that worked for me and it's a LOT easier than getting your nails ripped out.
