LOL @ U ... I am a fan of the Paleo Diet for Athletes. They recommend not eating anything before a workout that is too fibrous or slow to digest (like grains and dairy, haha). Also, grains and dairy raise the acidity level in your body, which can make you more tired. Their recommendation is for something high-glycemic about 10 minutes before your workout. Like a banana ... or Shot Bloks ... things that are high in sugar (to help you make glycogen) AND easy to digest. You don't want to trouble your tummy with working too hard while you're running or cycling ... seems to work really well for me, though I can't eat anything but Shot Blocks before I run ....

I can tell you what NOT to drink!!! I did a steady 1/2 marathon distance for training two Saturdays ago and had a 1/2 glass of orange juice 45 minutes before my run...had heartburn for the first 6-7 miles. Bad...I never get heartburn. Before runs I usually have a gel and a 1/2 bagel (more if the time will go beyond an hour) with a light spread of peanut butter. This is pretty standard for me and seems to work well. Another thing I avoid is caffeinated gel on an empty stomach. Again, bad...makes me shaky and feeling very empty 1/2 way through my run.

Spicy food...I love to eat spicy food but following it with a workout is not so smart.

No deep dish pizza before swimming - really nothing acidic - no red sauce!  And it applies before biking and running too...  I decided to carb load on spaghetti the night before a bike ride - I had the worst indigestion all the next day...

Its funny to see how we as triathletes learn to adapt our eating habits.

Dried fruit!  I've made this mistake far too many times.
