Sunny
Total Time = 1h 00m 27s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Chatted with Stacers & Infosteward. Looked around the course. Laid out transition in a good spot.
Event warmup:

Spent too much time looking around and didn't warm up much.
Ran with Dills38 then stretched.
Swim
  • 34m 11s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 17s / 100 meters
Comments:

First swimming competition - second OW swim. Most importantly, I was very comfortable with the OW. First 200m was very slow and lots of beginner banging!
What would you do differently?:

Do what Dills did - get away from the gooberheads and swim like hell to get position!
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

I put my watch on the outside of my wetsuit, then forgot to remove it while running up the beach. had to put the sleeve back on to get the watch off! Doh!
What would you do differently?:

1. Watch inside wetsuit
2. Get a tri top to wear in the wetsuit
3. No socks (for short runs)
4. Put the elastic laces (that I already bought) on my shoes.
Run
  • 23m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Very tight calves to start the run. Almost had some leg cramps just getting out of the wet suit and into the shoes. After 200m legs were great and i found some speed.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder sooner.

Jog out to run in with Infosteward!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience. the beauty of this series is that it's a chance to learn and train. Nice small crowd in a fantastic location. How lucky to get to play in this cool park!!! Anyway, as long as I'm learning and making my mistakes here, then I should be faster & more comfortable in REAL races.
Oh, and I need more swimming strength & endurance.
I think I'll start swimming 2 laps here on Mon & Wed. That's 3600m twice a week. Should help the endurance.

Event comments:

Felt like a "club race". Very cool! And, who needs an aid station at 2.5k? Just git your buns to the line and join the fiesta!
I wonder how many racers were there!? Maybe 100.

Course: There are two races, one at 2.5k and one at 5k. Both are out & back on a gravel road. The 2.5k turnaround marker is one quarter of the 5k run, so I kept 4 splits. Q1 was generally uphill. Q2 started uphill but was mostly gentle downhill, some flat. Q3 back up the gentle Q2 hill. Q4 Fast downhill with a flat finish.

Nice race, Brett!! Did you cross off your "learn to swim" goal in your log yet?  I think you did a great job, especially for your first race in OW.

It is a gorgeous course.  I'm looking forward to the next in the series

Great race my friend!  It was to see you run, I haven't seen that yet, you looked good.  Can't wait for the rest.  I still don't know my splits so I will report later!  Nice Job!

You're too funny man. Thanks for running me in. And yeah that swim seemed a lot longer than 1500 m at any rate I changed my distance based upon yours. Great run man. You rock!
