Subject: RE: Mel Gibson movie......best or favorite nighthawk - 2009-10-21 11:38 AM I have to go with 'We Were Soldiers' as my all time favorite with Gibson. Hard to fight back tears when you hear the West Point Choir sing 'Mansions of the Lord.' I was lucky enough to be a senior at West Point when this movie came out. They debuted it there for the cadets (primarily juniors/seniors ) and some faculty, and Mel Gibson and cast were in attendance, along with GEN Shinseki and several other generals. But more importantly, the real Hal Moore and many of the other Vietnam vets from his unit were there as well. At the beginning, it was the cast that got a pretty good clap, at the end, it was for the veterans. And it wasn't just a clap, there was that, but then every single one of us stood there in a reverent silence and show of respect as the Veterans stood to leave. We stood silent, facing them until they had all exited the theater. I had never heard the Corps so quiet nor seen us more reverent save the times we did Taps vigils for cadets who passed away. It was awesome to see that movie in the company of those veterans. I don't have many "wow" movie moments, but this was one of them. |
