I caught a bit of one of his earlier movies, The Year of Living Dangerously and got me to thinking....

He has quite a plethora of movies, very diverse.  Historical, comedy, dramas, action

I've enjoyed a lot of his movies...none touches Braveheart. It's one of my favorites of all-time.

I love Braveheart as well but I wrote in The Patriot probably more because of Heath Ledger though.

They don't fall under either best or favorite, but when I think of his movies, the ones that come to mind are the Lethal Weapon series and Payback.  Specifically, the toe smashing scene in Payback.  Wish I could get that out of my head.  Argh.

That's like asking about your favourite 2 hours of constipation. Not a time I care to remember.

However if forced out of me (that's a pun)...

Gallipoli (bad bad date flick)

Man Without a Face (Nick Stahl was brilliant)

What about movies he has directed. Passion of the Christ... for example.

Of the list above I selected Braveheart. That was a great film.

x2 on what women want. Only cause I pictured him with a big sword charging an army dressed in panty hose. I voted for road warrior though. Childhood attachment beats out actual quality any day of the week.

Absolutely would have to be The Year of Living Dangerously, both in terms of his best and my favourite.

Road Warrior - my all-time favorite of the post-apocalyptics.

Braveheart was awesome though.

Did someone really vote for What Women Want? Embarassed

I had totally forgotten about "Payback"
that's one of the coolest movies ever. So, now I'm split between it and "What women want"

Payback, the two Mad Max movies (not including the Thunderdome one with Tina Turner) and Braveheart, yes.

And of course the Lethal Weapons were good.

That WAS a good movie - actually, the first thing I thought of when I saw this poll. Saw that in junior high and it was one of my favorites for awhile. I've never actually seen Braveheart and really don't care to. The Patriot was good too, but mostly because the supporting cast was good - ie, Heath Ledger, the dude who plays the bad guy (who also plays Lucius Malfoy in the HP movies).

In general, I feel like Mel Gibson is kind of like Tom Cruise - they have both been in some entertaining movies and once in a blue moon do a good job with the acting, but for the most part, they're really NOT that talented. They just got by on looks and charisma. Then they both turned out to be whackjobs.

I can't believe that "We Were Soldiers" is getting no love.

Terrific movie with historical accuracies and relevance.  Sam Elliot as the Sgt Major was classic Sgt Major.
Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: I wonder what was going through Custer's mind when he realized that he'd led his men into a slaughter?
Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: Sir, Custer was a pu$$y. You ain't.

Sgt. Ernie Savage: Good morning, Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: How do you know what kind of gd day it is?

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: I think you oughta get yourself an M-16.
Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground.

I'm glad someone else put Hamlet--got my vote too. Hmm, let's see, Shakespeare or Mad Max, that's a tuffy.

Seriously, a very good screen adaptation of the classic. It also put Gibson on the map as a competent actor.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

"Master-Blaster! Master Blaster!!!"

"Waaaalkerrrrr, Waaaalkerrrrr"

"Buh!" "Buh! Buh!"

I love the intro scene where he removes a bazillion weapons before going into Bartertown.

Tina Turner as the main bad guy.

What a wonderful, so-bad-it-is-good film for me.

I have to go with 'We Were Soldiers' as my all time favorite with Gibson. Hard to fight back tears when you hear the West Point Choir sing 'Mansions of the Lord.'

It is no longer an issue.  Man Card Time Police have come back from the future and destroyed his man card while he was watching the movie. If he needs his nuts sewn back on, I have urology friends.
