fire34fighter - 2009-11-07 2:02 PM I try to run with my lab but he's still an 8 month old pup so most of the time he tries to run a 5:00 pace where I'm still at a 9:00.

I've been told by several vets and real elsewhere not to run my retriever until his bone structure is fully grown at 18-24 months, as doing so beforehand is a recipe for hip/joint problems. FWIW

I was told that also, after I'd done a few short runs w/ my puppy -- luckily he was no worse for it (as far as we can tell at this point), but we went back to walking on leash til he was older.  Pretty sure we only waited til 12 months tho, but he was 24  months before we were putting in lots of miles training for a marathon.

And since we're bragging about our babies, I'm adding a pic of my Moose

I used to be able to jog with my dog, he liked it a lot, but I only started him out doing it when he was 8 or so, and eventually I became too fast for him.  Last run he did it was kind of hot and he refused to go any more.  He's 11 now, still going strong, but doesn't have the spunk to run really.

My fiancee's labradoodle has crazy amounts of energy and we've taken her on runs up to 13 miles, but will now give her a 10 mile cap since the one route we went on has gravel surface and her paws didn't agree with that so we're going to take it easy on her.

Hey, he asked for opinions on dogs. I said "I'd" stay away from them as a running partner, I didn't say I'm an authority on the breed. She was a mix, looked like a full breed but we didn't know her lineage, and was 9 months old when I got her. They are a fantastic breed and awesome dogs and I'd get another one as a pet,. As an owner of one, I obviously got the chance to meet lots of other border collies and their owners and see many of them in action. If I could have safely only run her off leash I think it would have been very successful. But, they are breed for their herding instinct - compulsively chasing, nipping and barking at anything that moves. A few times running with her on trails and she terrorized mountain bikers. Once, in Vermont, we passed a horse pasture and she hopped an electric fence to go check out some horses. That made me really popular in my sister's neighborhood.

In a small yard without a ton of distractions, she was very well trained and would come, sit, stay, roll over, jump through hoops, catch a frizbee, run through a tunnel, etc. She was a great house dog too, could stay home alone for hours and didn't care to sleep on furniture.

I've had two German Shorthairs and they can run all day.

As mentioned before, they have a ton of energy.  Walks really don't cut it.  So in addition to your running, they'll likely need 30 mins of fetch (at least) on non-run days.

I've never had the cut problem a previous poster mentioned.  I think the short hair is great.  You don't need to brush them and the shedding mess is much, much less.

I have a labradoodle that loves to run....on leash he goes 3-4 miles without slowing down, then switches to a 10-min mile, so if I am running locally and longer than that, I drop him at home and keep on going.  Off leash, on trails, he's gone up to 9 miles without complaint, and had a blast.

And yes, he's cute!

Vizslas. I could talk about how great my girls are all day, (but I won't) THey are sweet, loyal, bred to hunt (run) all day. They have to be part of the family they want to follow you around and do everything with you. My oldergirl, Sadie I just started taking on longer distances. She has gone up to 10 miles but I am about to start taking her longer I think. She is happy to run at pretty much any pace I happen to be going , and is trained to the beeping of my garmin. She will know to stop or start again when she hears the beep! They can get a little crazy when under-exercised though. Not a good dog if you are gone during the day for long hours!

My Australian Shepherd, Blue, he loves a good trail run. He helps me go further and takes my mind off of how out of shape I am.

Pic of him sleeping in the backseat of my truck on the way back from a trail run.

Breeds/mixes of breeds I've been looking at:
German Shepard
Labs
Boxers
Pit Bulls
Border collies
american bulldogs
pointers

Are there any of these I should not be looking at? others I should? Or can any dog handle these distances/speeds and laugh at me when were done?

Have fun picking out a dog!  I think your "short list" of breeds is  a good one, and  many dogs can be conditioned to endurance running.  I know of someone who completes 20mi long runs with his standard poodle.

The only breeds you mentioned that I would have concerns about :
1) Boxers are brachycephalic (short faced) dogs, so they have narrow airways and may experience more respiratory issues.  They are often less heat tolerant than other breeds.  Also, if looking at Boxers, inquire about any history of heart disease which is over-represented in that breed.

2)With  German Shepherds, find out about family history of GDV (also known as stomach twisting or gastric torsion). Also, I rarely see a shepherd with a good temperament these days

And let it be known that Pit Bulls rule!!  They are the total package - Stamina, short hair, fun personalities, couch potatoes when not outdoors, tons of them in rescues and humane societies (in need of homes), and some people are wary of them  -  that alone might provide a bit of protection for you while running solo on the trail!  They can be stubborn and need careful socializing and a firm hand with training, but they are great dogs!

Our GSP runs at least 30 miles when we hike 12 and he's still not tired even tho he's been running around the yard all day -- yeah, they have energy.  That's what they're bred for.  If we had gotten ours as a pup we may have been able to train him to be a jogger/walker, but we didn't.

Haha.  Sounds very familiar.

It's probably also worth mentioning the Gentle Leader.   It can really help with dogs that aren't the best on a leash.  My girl was abysmal on a leash because she spent most of her time running through the woods, but that helped a lot.  On dogs that are introduced to them as pups they work fantastic.  Much nicer than a choke chain.

Tried it, he just runs w/ his head facing backwards and still pulls on the leash and hops and is generally spazzy.  The only thing that keeps him from pulling is to loop the leash around one of his front legs, but then he's still hopping and spazzy.  He's loveable but hopeless for jogging.  Luckily we have lots of room nearby to let him run for miles and miles and miles.  He's also the neediest dog I've ever had -- thinks he's a lapdog and has to be in the middle of everything.  I prefer the loyal and loving but unneedy demeanor of pit bulls.

My German Shorthairs have had no problems doing 20 mile runs. I agree that they need quality excercise every day.

My Poodle/American Eskimo mutt runs 5-6 miles with me no problem. He has tons of energy and loves it. When he sees me come down dressed to run he won't leave my side. When I don't take him he is depressed.

We haven't tried longer runs together but I would guess that he could go longer than I could.

I have a German Shephard and a Border Collie.  Both are great running dogs, but useless on a leash (my fault - not enough training).  My BC tends to settle down after about 4 km and then runs properly.

My mom has always had Border Collies and runs with them every day - off leash.  She had never had any problems but the were all very well trained and would stop dead if told to stop.

Just remember you can't just start them running high milage.  They also need to build the distance  and fitness levels up.

I however found that as my training got more intense I would leave them at home more often.  I run better without them.  With them I tend to stop to cross the roads, making them sit each time.

Thank you everyone for the advise. After seeing all these pic's I want to run out now and get a dog!

Most of the dogs I'm looking at are mixes, commonly with Pit bull, lab, boxer, and German shepard mixed in.  So it looks like most dogs I've looked at could also be good running partners.

I'm looking at dogs around 1 to 2 years old, but never thought that I had to wait til that age to run them. I will talk to my vet for recommendations when redy.  I know that I will have to spend time ramping the dog up in distance, probably starting with 1 to 2 miles.  I have been very successful in training dogs in the past, however I probably will not let it run off the leash just because of the area I am in.

The quote below just added a whole new dimension to triathlons. I only have to work the swim and bike hard, then train a pitbull to run with me after T2 and scare off all the other runners

I have had two labs (number two is 6 now) and neither liked to run, especially at a faster pace.  They could walk all day and love to chase balls until exhaustion, but I always ended up dragging them while running.  I take current one for a walk/jog as a warm up, then drop her at home before going for my real run.  I want my next dog to run with me!

Our older dog lily, a flat coat retriever mix, used to run and run and run with my wife, and then with me as well once we got together. at over 10 years old now though she has bad hips and just cant run with us like that though she likes to go for long walks still and to go and run around the puppy park when she can. Our newer dog is a black lab/??? mix. She is only about 40-45 pounds but has boundless energy and a chase instinct like nothing I have ever seen (been around all different breeds of dogs my whole life) She also has a great memory (read we went hiking on a path 3 months ago and have not been back since, she still gets excited and remember the exact place on the trail where she saw a squirrel and wants to go looking for it.) We have only had her for about 6-7 months so are still working on a lot of training issues (no training when we got her from the humane society at 4.5 years old) but we take her on 1-2 runs a week of 30-45 minutes in length and she does great.

I will also note she is the snuggliest 45 pound lap dog I have ever seen.
