Subject: Litter - *sigh*

I'm pretty certain I had a thread about litter a while back but can't find it and can't be bothered to search.

Out on a hour ride with the missus yesterday and the amount of litter continues to be staggering.  I've been riding fairly consistantly for almost 3 years now and it just doesn't get any better.  What is worse is that many of my routes are through, or close to, forest preserves.  It is almost as if idiots see a "put your trash here" sign.  Makes me so damn mad.

I just don't get it.  I really don't.  Why would anyone do this?  Seriously.  An entire trash bag thrown on the side of the road in a forest preserve.  People purposefully throwing things out.  There is very little that gets me as riled up as seeing someone litter.

I just don't get it.

Because most counties don't provide rural trash pickup.   If you're lucky, they'll provide a place where you can take your trash for "free."  Some places, you have to pay to take it.

I can pay $25 per month to have my trash picked up by a private company.  Or, I can take it 5 miles down the road to the "free" (paid for by taxes) transfer station, which also provides recycling drop off.

I recycle and compost more than I throw away, so I can take 1 trash can every 2 weeks.

some people show up with a whole truckload full of trash.

When I was building my house, I had several truckloads of non-recyclable trash.  If you don't watch it REAL close, it'll blow out the back sometimes.

So, the answers for bags of trash on the side of the road are:

1. They don't have a place to take it, so they dump it.
2.  They can't afford to dump it legally, so they dump it illegally.
3.  They aren't watching it real close, and it blows out the back.

1. They don't have a place to take it, so they dump it.  Not an excuse.  You're responsible for properly disposing of your trash.
2.  They can't afford to dump it legally, so they dump it illegally.  Not an excuse.  See #1
3.  They aren't watching it real close, and it blows out the back.  Still not an excuse.  Get a tarp...

Oh, and by the way:

  • Punctured bike tubes are trash.  If you can pack a fresh tube in, you can pack the old tube out.
  • Same goes for CO2 cartridges.
  • Same goes for empty gel packages--invest in a ziploc bag if you want to avoid the sticky mess.

Rant complete.

I noticed a lot more trash this weekend because the leaves have fallen off most of the trees.  During the summer, you don't see how much crap gets thrown back in the woods.

Of course, one of my time wasters is to pick out a particular piece as I go by, try to figure out how long it may have been there (crushed, faded, etc), and make up a story about how it got there.  It helps to bypass the time on long rides and runs, that's for sure.

Don't rant at me.   I'm not excusing them.   I'm explaining them. There's a difference.

And to expand a bit more.  It isn't just the bags of trash.  Heaven knows how often I see people throw out entire bags from fast food restaurants.  Or cups.  Or wrappers.

Just all of it.  Drives me absolutely bonkers.

Indeed.  I hate it too.   I saw a guy walking down the road the other day.   I had some sort of trash in his hand.   He actually LOOKED AROUND to see if anyone was watching before he through it off the bridge he was on.  So, he KNEW he was doing something wrong... was just too lazy to carry the trash.  I honked and flipped the bird, just to let him know someone WAS watching.

And THAT is precisely the attitude I don't get.  I've also seen something like this happen when there was a trash can another 50-60 meters further ahead.  I just shake my head in disgust.

Seriously - dude - I'm not sure if that is certifiably insane or absolute creative genius.

Totally get it. I am always shocked at the number of coffee cups - you can see them at highway on/off ramps. seriously, you couldn't just keep that in your car until you got home?  or stopped at a rest station? All gas stations have garbage cans. How lazy are we??  That definitely did not blow out of the car ...

But then I am someone who will carry a pop can until I find a recycle bin ...

Mind if I pile on??

Cigarettes!!!  I can't believe the blatant littering by smokers.  It is as if it is perfectly acceptable to throw cigarette butts wherever you please.  NOBODY seems to care.  I've never heard of an instance of a smoker being cited for littering.  Why is this?  Wouldn't they make a better source of revenue for city, than by pulling me over 3x in the last month for "excessive window tint"?  But I digress...

I honk at people who throw their cigs out the window (i know i know... noise pollution).  Most of the time, they flip me off.  They think the world is their ashtray, and they have no shame.  It is vile.

I feel a little better now... but not much.

X2

I was just about to write this. Why do smokers think it is ok to litter. They don't want that crap in their own car but the outside is fine.

Let's not get started with them everywhere else.

I have only seen a person get a ticket for littering a cig. butt once. The guy was a senior in my High school when I was a junior, he was 18 at the time. As he drove away from school he flipped it out his window not know that right behind him was our school police officer in his unmarked cruiser. You guessed it, lights on, pulled over, and a big ticket. He also got in trouble because of the fire ban at the time and our school was out near farmland with a lot of dry grass near the roadway.

It is still gross the way people litter all over the place. If I can pick up my dogs poop every time she takes a dump on a walk certainly these people can hold on to their trash till they get to a can to toss it in.

Throwing a lit butt out the window became a ticketable offense a few years ago when one of our state congressmen got pegged between the eyes by a lit butt traveling IN his open car window.

Who says the government doesn't work "for the people!"
