Subject: Must Listen Audio Books - Suggestions Please!
So, I'm addicted to audio books.  I always have one going in my car for driving (did I mention I only work 7.5 miles from home?).  And one on my Ipod to listen to while running easy (have to crank up the tunes for any tempo or speedwork).  I get my audio books from Audible and I have over 100 titles.  Problem is that I am on the one a month plan for $14.95 and I want to make sure I don't waste my money.  Sometimes it takes me days to figure out what to listen to next.

Some of my favorites include:
Cutting for Stone by  Abraham Verghese
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (didn't really like the sequel) by Stieg Larsson
The World According to Garp by John Irving
Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
Endurance by Alfred Lansing
World w/out End, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
Janet Evanovich books but only if read by Loreli King

What are some other must listen to audio books?

Thanks!

I've really gotten into podcasts....namely triathlon/endurance podcast.

On iTunes do a search for triathlon and/or marathon and there are a ton. Some of my favorites thus far are

The Age Groupers
Simply Stu
Zen and the Art of Triathlon
Two Gomers Run a Marathon

I like audio books too but these are updated usually weekly and are pretty informative (and free).

I'll check that out.  I tried it once and the one I got was kinda boring so I didn't try again.  But I'll give it another go.

Anyone else - someone out there must listen to audio books!

If you liked Pillars of the Earth, you could try River God and then The Seventh Scroll both by Wilbur Smith. HOURS of entertainment - probably about 40 between the two of them. River God is set in ancient Egypt and among the several plot lines is the secret burial place of a pharoah and his treasure. The Seventh Scroll is the modern day 'Indiana Jones' race to find it. Hubby enjoyed both of these too.

I'm currently listening to Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It's a "stepping through the standing stones/time travel" story. So far quite entertaining. (I'm on 17 of 32 cds). The other one that I haven't finished is Pale Horseman which is set in England about 900ad about a northern englishman who was captured by the norse in a raid and is back in England, and the political climate of that time. Obviously I'm currently on an English historical novel binge.

We - hubby and I on long car trips -  like listening to any of Dick Francis' mysteries. His stories all take place in a background of English horseracing/steeplechasing. Another murder mystery is Lillian Jackson Braun's Cat Who series. They are 'cozies' and very light entertainment - which is sometimes a nice break from the ginormous epics. Unless you get a 3 volume set in one, Cat Who is probably not worth $14.95 for one book though. Dick Francis' books sometimes come in three volume/one book too.

Does your library have audio books? Might be a good way to test out a new author or a shorter book like those mysteries.

I googled Janet Evanovich - I'll have to check her out. Thanks for mentioning her!

x3 - fabulous story.

I recently got into audio books when I had my eye surgery - now I'm hooked.

My favourite so far has been The Alchemist - narrated by Jeremy Irons. His voice and 'reading' is what really makes a great story even greater. So - I'd have to recommend anything narrated by Jeremy Irons. ;-)

I love the Outlander series - I have listened to all but the latest one I think.

My library does have audio books and I used to get them there but I got tired of going to the library and having to return them by a certain time.  I usually listen to longs strories in the car that are 2 and 3 parts and if I'm only driving to and from work they can take a while to listen to.

Thanks for the other suggestions - I'll check them out.

Thanks Trishie - I have heard The bonfire of the vanities and loved it.

Tried to listen to born to run on the way to IMKY with a friend and we just couldn't get thru it.

Gods in Alabama is on my wishlist and The girl who stopped swimming will be next on my IPOD.  Looks great.

Any other suggestions welcome!

YES- the library is the best. The best thing to do is go to online to your libraries catalog, and specifically search for the titles you are interested in. A lot of times, they'll only have 1 or 2 copies of each title, but you can usually reserve a title. That way, you can get what you want for free, and often have numerous audiobooks at once.

I really enjoyed John Sanford's 'Prey' series. The first book is quite old- 1986 maybe?-but the series has continued all these years and is very exciting. The narrator for all of the books is Richard Ferrone, and I really like his voice.

I just listened to 'Time Traverler's Wife' on audiobook and loved it as much as the print version.

I can also tell you who to avoid- Robert Parker- his books are terrible.

I think I will head to the library for some that I can listen to in my car.

But problem with the ones from the library is you can't put them on your IPOD without massive amounts of work.  I've tried this - the computer considers them music CDs and you have to download each one, rename each track and then make a playlist.

I love the Women's Murder Club books by James Patterson, and just picked up his new novel, Swimsuit, to listen to on the way home for Thanksgiving.

Listened to Mere Christianity by CS Lewis, and was blown away.

I too, have a 7.5 mile commute - but listen to books on CD - I especially love the Mp3 one's - I am that lazy that I dont' want to have to change discs!  (Although some could argue thats a safety issue too - changing CD's while driving...)

I stumbled upon an audio book - that was appallingly entertaining!  If you didn't enjoy Animal House or Old School or movies like that - probably won't find it funny...

The Real Animal House: The Awesomely Depraved Saga of the Fraternity That Inspired the Movie

You're right- real CDs are a bigger pain than audible files- but it's A LOT less work if you don't rename each track. If you just leave each track the same, but put the correct author in, then in the title spot put 'Title of Book Disc01' for the first disc, then 'Title of Book Disck02', etc., you can then just click on the author's name, and all of the discs should stay in order. That's what I do for my shuffle and for my regular ipod and it works great!
