Pre-race routine:

Shhhh! Don't tell coach I did this run! Today was supposed to be a rest day because I have Tinman tomorrow, but I just couldn't resist when Pat mentioned it to me earlier in the week. So, this was very spur of the moment. Got up too early, 5 am...ate a power bar, did some things around the house, had some pb crackers and made it to the Alleyfest around 6:40, registered and then stood around forever because as usual, I was there way to early. Oh, also...I didn't realize they had a 10k until I went to register...I told my hand, "No, don't check the 10k box!" but the hand insisted so that's what I did.
Event warmup:

I jogged for about 6 minutes beforehand and did some stretches so I actually had somewhat of a warm-up, go me! Saw several people I knew from the bike clubs so talked with them until the start.

Comments:

Okay, told myself out loud to just run strong, but not hard and enjoy the run...I've got a real race tomorrow. Inside though, my mind was already reering to go. We took off and I was going way way too fast. I tried to tell myself that the people ahead of me were the 5k peeps and to not let it bother me, but of course, it did. Jeff ran by me and said, "So much for taking it easy." So that reminded me to slow down and I did an itty bitty bit. I hit the 2 mile mark in 13:10! Holy cow, I haven't seen times like that in forever! I hit the 5k line around 21 min. flat, which I think may be my fastest 5k ever. Started on the second loop and I could see Jeff in my sights, slowly caught up the gap and passed him. Ha ha! Then, a motorcycle cop came up beside me. I thought he was just watching the course, but then he got in front of me. Wait a second, I'm the lead female!! I'm the lead female!! Woohoo! Happy dance! I've never had a lead vehicle before. Okay, focus Gina, you won't stay lead female if you don't keep moving. The cop came beside me and said that I was it. He would try to talk to me every now and then and I would just kind of look at him like, Buddy, does it look like I'm the talking mood right now?! Then, he's talking to one of his police buddies at an intersection and then turns inches in front of me, like I could have knocked him off the bike that's how close he was to me. He then tells me to turn, but I can see the men going straight in front of me, plus, this was my second loop and I knew we didn't turn. Sure enough, he's like, oh my bad, sorry. Idiot!! So, kept on trucking, my second lap was way slower than my first, I went out way to hard. It annoyed me when plice dude when ride beside me instead of in front of me because the motorcycle was so hot. It was overcast today and so muggy, I was just soaked. I started to pass people from the 5k course and the police guy said, "Wow, your passing the 5k people, that's amazing! Still mad at you, shut up! However, the cool thing was as we turned on to the last block into the finish he turned on his siren and everyone was going crazy...made me feel like a real runner!
What would you do differently?:

Umm, not run and do what I was told, lol.
Post race
Warm down:

I got mobbed for pictures and everyone telling me good job. Eventually made it to some water and a banana. Then, get this, I actually did a cooldown! Jogged for about 7 min. and then did some stretches. I thought I better since my race is tomorrow. Then, waited around forever for the awards. I got a nice big trophy and it has the female runner on top with the ponytail, cool!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much I guess. This is my fastest 10k ever so I was pleased.

Event comments:

Good fun, local run. They did a good job, I had fun.

Course: This course was in the downtown area. Glad they managed to find all the hills out there. We had to run through the train underpass 4 times so that always sucked climbing up out of that. 10kers did 2 loops of the 5k course.

Nice run Gina!!!   But I am gonna tell your coach!!!  Who am I kidding, you will probably smoke everyone tomorrow too.  Nice "warmup" 10K today......but you do have to give the trophy back......It is worthless unless it has "pigtails" on it!!!

Great race - hope you don't get in trouble for slipping out of the house to pick up a little hardware!! Can't imagine running behind/next to a cop bike with the siren going! Must've helped with the finish kick
