Veteran 141 Wolverine, Michigan | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms Be thankful for the "Resolutioners", if it was not for them most of the gyms would be closed. They pay the light bill for the full year and only use it for 6 weeks. Besides who do you feel more fit standing next to, someone who just came back from Kona or someone who just came from China Buffet? I am not saying it is good to compare yourself to other people, but it helps to remember where we came from or what we would be if we didn't train. |

Pro 4277 Parker, CO | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms Thought about this thread when I went to the gym this morning. Arrived and my usual parking spot and locker were taken. At 5am on Tuesday it is usually just me and another lady in the lap pool. Today there were 2 guys I have never seen before. Made some small talk with one of the guys as I exited the pool. I guess you can look at the new guys at the gym the same way that a lot of people look at cyclists on the road; "a pain in the azz". Or you can take the approach that they are out doing something to try and better themselves in some way. I ight get a little annoyed but I also try to make them feel welcome in some way. |

Member 255 Lafayette, LA. | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms marmadaddy - 2009-12-28 10:01 AM The bubbler is blocked by someone who is trying hard not to look totally out of their element. You can't get in the pool because it's jammed with people using pull buoys on their arms and kickboards as flotation devices. Half the lanes have people with no goggles and baggy swim trunks down to their knees who can't swim an entire lap. WTF is a bubbler? |

Lafayette, CO | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms Livestrong191 - 2009-12-29 6:56 AM One way I found to get ride of those people who are not ment to be in the swim lane is swim 2 laps butterfly. The waves and all the splashing will get them out that lane chop chop. You're missing the point. Marma - thanks for the reminder! |

Champion 34263 Chicago | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms Ha I thought about this thread last night at the gym. There were a couple of new girls there, very very attractive, and it didn't take long for the new guys to swoop in. I'd feel bad for the one girl but her interest seemed genuine, if not feigned, when the dude who did four reps on each machine as fast as he could was telling her about proper form. I wanted to take this thread to heart and help out the hottie who looked SO LOST. She was carrying her purse, still, and was just kind of looking around as if to say `Uh, what's this machine do?' If not for rule No. 3, I would've probably talked to her. |

Master 1610 Kirkland, WA | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms Thanks for posting this again Marma - it is a great perspective to have. Think about it, if only 5% of the resolutionists stick to it, it is that many more people that are living a healthy lifestyle, and getting fit. That reminds me of one of my favorite things about going to any race - the number of people in shape. It is hard to find crowds of thousands of people that are fit. . very hard. Lets hope, in 2010 more people stick and achieve their goals to drop weight and live more healthy! |

11 | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms I love this board and this sport! So much positivity. I'm tempted to amusement and frustration at the gym/pool at the beginning of each year, but I realize I have the advantage of being a young bachelor who works part time and goes to school. I see in them my possible future as I get into my career and my life starts getting more complicated, and I might simply lose the availibility/energy for the workouts I do now. It's easy to see them as a bunch of fat, weak people trying unsuccessfully to get into shape, but some of the individual stories are inspiring. Some come back from heart problems, some from deadly cancers, some from war, etc. Others feel that tiny twinge of inspiration, which will hopefully get louder and louder until it turns into a roar and locks in their resolve. It's that tiny spark of inspiration, that tiny orange ember, those inspiring stories, that set us all ablaze! Thanks for the perspective. |

Veteran 295 Ft Campbell, Kentucky | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms I agree 100%, and it doesn't have to be just the start of the New Year. I help people out all year long, most are really open for help and tips. I have had people come up to me 4-6 months later and say thanks. And, you said bubbler............ not many know this word but us Northerners!!!! |

If not for rule No. 3, I would've probably talked to her. We are still waiting. What is rule No. 3? Never try to pick a girl when you are sweaty. Only date 3 girls at a time. Don't try to pick a girl who carries a purse around a gym. Edited by NorthernNewbie 2009-12-29 1:30 PM |

Expert 1215 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Crowded Pools and Gyms I've been going to the gym for many years and just got used to the resolutionists for the first couple of weeks every year. This past January, this very large guy showed up to a spin class. He happened to locker near me. I decided to make it my goal to make him a regular. Well, the end of the year is here and he is too! Now I have to find a new victim, er, resolutionist to convert to a regular. |
