Current water temp is about 41 deg. F nearby the State Park.  The coolest temp was 40 deg. in the last month.

It will warm up by May, but it is likely to be fairly cool.  I'll put some updates on the temp as the race gets closer.

There's some up and down to the bike---nothing killer but enough to keep it interesting....not sure on the IMCDA course so can't really compare for you BUT I'd guess it's not as hilly (just a total guess though!!!)

Anyone know how hilly the bike course is? I am doing this as my tune-up to IM CDA and am trying to figure out if the two courses are even remotely comparable.

I've heard it described as "large chain ring rolling hills" for what that's worth

Lake Anna Temp up to 44 deg F near by the state park.  Temo up 3 deg in the last week or so.  Should heat up more quickly as spring arrives.

I wore a full sleeve last year and didn't even notice the temp---and I had been worried about it (lots of talk about dizziness, etc...).  If it's already hitting 50* we'll be good come race day!!

Late temps in the area increased to about 60 and dropped a little bit.  Should be upper 60 to low 70s by race day.

Hi Susan... I finally bit the bullet this morning and signed up.  Only 9 spots left.  I had hoped to decide after this Saturday's sprint in Lynchburg, but couldn't take the chance on waiting any longer.  My training seems a bit like yours... some good weeks, some not so good weeks.  Tough to balance it all.  I wish I had a few more OLYs under my belt, but I guess there's always a first.  Probably won't be pretty, but I think I can finish before the cut-off time.

So any tips for this HIM newbie anyone?

Are people staying over in the area or driving up in the morning?

Time to order my wetsuit too!

Stu---you'll do GREAT!!  Just remember it's your first and to enjoy it!  As for advice---plenty of good stuff out there but one of the best (so you can enjoy your day) is to find an easy gear on the bike and back off one more!!!  That goes along with the saying about if you take it too easy on the bike you have 13.1 miles to make up for it BUT if you went too hard on the bike you have to pay the price for 13.1 miles!!!

Edit to add---as it gets closer to race day we'll have to come up with a BT meeting spot for before/after the race since looks like we'll have a nice little group!!

Excellent idea!  You'll find me making friends with the paramedics before the race (always helps to have friends in the right places).  Seriously though, it will be nice to meet up with some BTers.  I joined after race season last year and it's been a really helpful group to keep the motivation up over the winter.  Thanks for the tips on the bike too, Skippy... I think I have a tendency to gear too hard generally.

Saw a race report yesterday that said water temp was 60 for the Rumpass which is supposed to be in the *warm* section of the lake... lol.

I did the Rumpass yesterday as a warm up for the Kinetic, the water was cold walking in to but once I started moving, I didnt give it a second thought.  And Im a big complainer about the pool being too cold.

Yesterday at the Rumpus Int'l the water temperature at the start was 66 degrees.  I didn't see anyone having trouble with the temperature.  There were some rolling eyes at the wind/waves, but the water simply felt cool.  Bottom line: It was no problem.  The next three week will probably see the rest of the lake warm up to the plant-side temperatures from yesterday.

Also, I think nearly the entire field wore a wetsuit.

Nix the 60 temp... that was last year's report.  Sorry about that.  66 sounds pretty promising!

So how did you all do?  Any problems with the roots reaching up and grabbing your ankles on the trial part of the run?

Stu- I did my first HIM after only doing one Oly(that had gotten turned into a DU because we couldn't swim) You'll do fine.  JUst remember that your first is for fun!! I'm a bit nervous because I wanted to do better than my last HIM. NOw I'll be glad to just finish strong.  I'm not a great winter trainer and this was something to keep me motivated thru the cold weather. Rent from wetsuit rentals and go to the Set Up site for the promo offer and get $10 off. I'll be doing a few OWS swims to get ready for the cold water. CAnt wait to meet everyone.  Usually I know a few people doing races but this time I'll be doing it by myself. So say Hi when you pass me on the run.. I'm slow!!

We sure do have a warped sense of fun around here ;-)

I hope to be running by that point, period and hope to see you around the course somewhere or you can find my lying on my back somewhere after the race :-

Skippy, we're looking to you to organize a gathering point.  I've never been to the venue... went to the other one at Anna... this one sounds like a nicer spot to hang out after the race.  I'm still trying to decide whether to camp the night before at the other park (first one is full now).

OK since I've been put on the spotWink  This is actually a great venue for meet/greet/gathering/fan viewing of the run.  This race is held at the state park and is therefore more spread-out/bigger area then the other races over at the marina.  Keep in mind I did this race last year as my first HIM (and second race ever) so that's all I have to judge it by.  There is a concessions area that they use for the post race food---nice deck area but it got a bit crowded last year.  There is a seperate restroom building but well not sure that's a great place to meet!!  The beach is right between the two buildings (if I remember correctly...).  Since it seems like at least a few of us are doing the race alone it might be nice to have a quick meeting BEFORE the race---just to at least see a face or two since the run course is three laps around the park you tend to see people at some point since fast or slow you will be out there (some on first lap while others are on third...)---that way we could at least see a familiar face and offer a little EXTRA encouragement!!  I guess at this point how many would be interested in trying to do this??  We can go from there for setting up a time/place....  As for post race---maybe we could do something on the beach---if someone has supporter they could set-up a chair or blanket or something in a corner of the beach and we could use that as a meeting point---probably closer to the concessions area so that people could grab food/drink and then have a place to sit and eat----as for time---it's a 0700 start time so we should all be done by about 12:30 right!?Tongue out

Love to have a meet up before the race.  I'm staying at a hotel near Kingsdominon.  Didn't want to have to get up at 3 and drive from Williamsburg. Hopefully it's a bit closer.

Yeah I should be done by 12:30, only in my dreams!! I figure it took 7 hours last year for the Patriot, so don't hang out and wait for me if your that fast!! LOL I'm hoping to come in around that time but with the slacking of training 7:30 is more of a reality

I am doing the race alone and would love to try to meet up afterwards.

Does anyone have anything with the BT logo printed on it?  Maybe that would be the best way to try to gather/find everyone.
