Yes, Yes, Yes! I love all things apple, I'm an apple tech.

I was hoping for an OLED screen though. But reports I've read online say the screen is very good and highly readable.
In a few years print newspapers and eventually magazines will cease to be published in print, ipad and/or something similar will be standard and probably subsidized by the publishers.

The only apple product I'm not happy with is apple TV too limited.

Probably not.  I have an iPod Touch, and LOVE it.  Fits right in my pocket, can surf the web (with a wireless network, of course), check my email, and do most of the things that the iPad does without the larger size.

marmadaddy - 2010-01-27 8:49 PM It has some cool features but the price is pretty high, particularly when factoring in the monthly data fee.

I'm looking at it and thinking "what problem would this solve for me?" but I can't come up with one.

Between my laptop and Android phone I'm covered, and perfectly good laptops can be bought for far less than these prices.

Buying an iPad (or iPod or iPhone) solves any number of problems: 1) you have too much money.  2) Steve Jobs does not have a enough money.  3) with every iPurchase you will increase your standing in Cult Apple.

The arm strap would thow my stride off. The aerodynamics are no good for the bike, It isn't waterproof, What use is it to me? It looks way more cumbersome than a simple clip I use now for a Shuffle.

But previous to this there has been nothing to replace print. Printing and distribution is too costly. People said similar things about the about not needing an iphone when it came out. I'm confident in apple for the most part.

YES!
Probably the only more successful smartphone is blackberry, but it's about 70% corporate phones. And blackberry is weak when it comes to new technology.

How would you define "overwhelming success"?

8.7 million units sold last quarter...

Thanks for the info.  I really was asking that as a question.  I think I only know one or two people who have them.

No, I'm covered with all the technology I need at the moment.  Unfortunately for the iPad, this release may not do as well as it would have a few years ago since there are many people saying i-Don'thaveafreakinjob.

I'm interested in getting one, either for myself or for my eldest son.  Probably closer to the fall.

Couple thoughts on the whole thing:

  • If etextbook publishing takes off, the iPad could grab a lot of that market.
  • Does this take a bite out of the Kindle and Nook market share?
  • Projections have been that by 2015, over 50% of book sales will be ebooks.
  • What's the reading experience on the iPad vs eink on a Kindle?
  • Social media is quickly becoming a dominant form of information and entertainment. How does the iPad fit in with that trend? How will information gathering, entertainment and communication habits change because of this new platform?
  • And most importantly, what kind of apps will be developed for the iPad.  For example, the iPhone runkeeper app is great as it is. When they are able to tether a HRM strap to it, it will replace a lot of other devices for folks. What kind of similar unforseen up to now apps will be developed for the iPad sized device?

There is plenty missing from the iPad.  However, I think it is a good step in developing this new platform.

One good upgrade down the line is if they let you tether the iPad to an iPhone for broadband.  I know it's ATT, so I won't hold my breath.  Still, it seems like a way to increase market share for the iPhone.

That's why I asked how you define it. If it's by the people you know that have them, maybe not. But I'm sure Apple is happy with what it's done.

If pressed, I could name a couple dozen people that I know have them. Maybe it's because this is pretty heavy AT&T country.

There you go wearing that marketing 101 hat again...how dare you!!!

I'm saving my money for the double-sided toothbrush I saw in the Sky Mall mag during my flight back from NY last night. I for one want to reclaim those extra two minutes a day spent brushing my teeth for a meager $40.

Indiana_Geoff - 2010-01-27 7:20 PM My choices are...

Ipod Touch (for mobile kindle reading, audible books and games) plus highly portable.
Netbook (have one already but I'll get a new one, internet access, can read books and keyboard).
Nook or Kindle (for relaxed reading).

OR

Ipod Touch
Ipad

I will probably go with the first combo.  The big problem is that the Ipad won't sit on my lap and let me type easily on forums like this.

So I plan on getting a nook/kindle and upgrading my Netbook for not a lot more than a Ipad.  Eventually I'll probably replace my blackberry with a Ipod or Android phone and be able to drop the touch.

This is exactly the same situation for me.

or you just have cooler friends Cool

I'm a big apple fan, but don't have an iPhone,  Most likely I'll get an iTouch to go with my Nook,

What's different is that apple isn't not really looking to sell millions of these right off the bat,, maybe 2-3 million, That's what they have reported as far as how they structure the price of the device..
And then see where the trends go, how it is being used, then it will take off ... Or not .... (IMHO )

Some IT tech on the UW campus sent this through - kinda funny -

" As an aside, my 14 year old son is an Apple fan, and would rather lose his left leg than be without his iPod.  When he saw the pics of the iPad, his first reaction was "That looks like an iPod for old people.  Does it come with a walker, too ?""

Yeah they'll either be geniuses again, or it will be another Newton...

It seems to come down to book reader quality and the ability to have a good book reader AND a internet/gaming email device in one...instead of just a book reader.

I'm a dinosaur that still reads the newspaper, yet leave the house too early many days to work out, so I miss it.  I am impatiently waiting for these readers to become newspaper substitutes.  Based on the color/multimedia it would seem the iPad would be a better product for that.  Of course, the data connection is always on with kindle, and ipad would require additional payments, etc.

Is there a reason these "reading applications" aren't usable on laptops/netbooks?

I was under the impression and I freely admit I might be wrong, but it was the e-readers screens are quite different than laptops, computers and even the iPad due in part to the refresh rate.   That's why I didn't think the iPad is a good substitute for reading, unless you can adjust that.   Hopefully some of the true tech peeps can set me straight.

I like how they are dealing with publishers though, I guess there will be an iBook store like iTunes.
I was also under the impression that Barnes and Noble had bought up the patent/lincense on the different formats for e-books to ensure there wouldn't be formatting issue's with their Nook.   A few friends of mine with kindles will have issues with how some books are displayed

Is it me or isn't one of the main selling points of a tablet computer the ability to "write" on it? That seems to be missing from this.
