Another reason to not run/jog with your ears plugged up.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- A 38-year-old father of two was jogging and listening to his iPod when he was hit from behind and killed by a small plane making an emergency landing on the beach, officials said Tuesday.

I wouldn't think twice to run with ipod on the beach like this guy. On the road? That is a different subject.

Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It still falls back on the pilot in my opinion.  Even if the windshield was covered with oil I would think he could sideslip enough to see if anything was in front of him.

sssssssssssssttttttttttttttttttttttrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettttttttttttttttcccccccccccccccccccchhhhhhhhhhhhh

Sorry, thats a bit much to connect.  That is a random and freak accident.  I've been on a beach with the wind and the waves so loud that I wouldnt be able to hear a glider either - which basically what this plane had become.

And I will always say to the anti-ipod ppl, do you drive w/ your radio on?  Isn't that distracting as well?  I wonder how many accidents happen b/c the music is too loud.  My unscientific guess is much more than joggers or bikers.

Great.  I already have to turn my head at every car that comes up from behind since I'm so much more "aware" without my music.  I have to look at the sound of every plane to make sure it won't hit me as well ???

x2.  It's a sad story and my heart goes out to his family but I don't think that you can blame it on the fact that he was wearing an ipod.

That's the thing ... if he was sitting on the sand listening to his iPod, he probably still wouldn't have noticed. It really is a freak accident.

What's the proper "hear the plane crashing into me" volume?

This accident has nothing to do with the ipod.

If you want to do something to prevent a plane from crashing into you, then you need to run against the traffic of the plane so you can see it coming.

Being that we don't know where planes are coming from, then this guy had no chance.

Somewhere between zero and where the guy in the story had it set.

And Gaarry - very well played.

when I'm at the gym my Ipod is blasting...

when I'm on the streets my ipod is just background music.

do know what is the perfect volume for plane crashing into me, and also I don't know the volume/sign/scream/lights/trafic lights that u have to use so the old lady driving Sunday morning to church doesn't kill u

LOL

Unfortunate accident, who knows if he could have even dodged the plane if he heard it. Not the ipods fault, but using open ear buds instead of inner ear buds is probably best for outdoor ipod usage.

Wow, so many threads on one topic - I must post pad.

But, if the jogger wasn't listening to his iPod, would he have looked and moved out of the way in time still?

Sad things happen to people for no reason.

There is a BTer whose child is friends with the parent that was listening to the iPod.  So perhaps we ought to put the kibosh on the jokes.

You never know who is on here... keep that in mind as you post.

^^^ 2x.  It's not about the iPod.  It was the pilots responsibility to sse where they land is clear.  If the beach had been more crowded it could have been a huge tragidy.  130mph comes up fast.   Lets have a little tack here.
