View Member's Race Log
Lake Geneva, WI
United States
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 43m 23s
Overall Rank = 129/275
Age Group = 36-40
Age Group Rank = 16/39
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45 out the door at 5. Mapquest directions got me lost, so I got to the race later than I wanted. Coffee, water, granola, banana on the way to the race.
Event warmup:

Not much time, especially in light of the long lines for marking etc... Set up transition, got rid of the coffee and water I drank on the way in, stretched, put on the wetsuit and listened to the pre-race instructions.
Swim
  • 23m 25s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had a great swim for me. My training swims at this disnatce came in at around 28 minutes. I sighted well, and got into a tempo early. I even caught the wave ahead of me. (Race splits show by per 100 pace at 1:28, not sure why it is higher here.)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I was very happy with this swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

T1 went well. Wetsuit came off fine, and I ot out quickly. pretty happy with it.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 30s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 17.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I was happy with the bike given my equipment. I got passed alot by people with much better bikes (I am still on my Fuji League with toe clips), and while I don't expect a tri bike will get me on the podium, I do think my time will improve. (Shopping this weekend) Still, I passed alot of the "sprinters" from earlier waves, and I am not unhappy with the ride.

I concentrated on keeping a steady pace and not blowing up on the bike. It worked well. I ate 1 gel before getting on the bike and one every 1/2 hour after that, drank alot of water. No bonk.

(Race splits show my per mile pace as lower than here. Also, my computer showed the bike time at 1:20 with and avg of 18.6 - something is not right)
What would you do differently?:

Get a new bike - tain more.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

In and out quickly
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Run
  • 53m 26s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

This run killed me. The heat, which did not bother me on the bike, combined with the hills kciked my ass. I stopped o drink at the stations, but there were not enough to keep me hydrated and cool. I did not walk, but at time while climbing I felt like my pace was close to a fast walk.

Plus, the humidity really kept me from getting my breathing comfortable. I felt like I was breathing through a wet blanket.

(Again, the race splits don't match with what is shown here)
What would you do differently?:

Train in heat.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank ALOT

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat on the run.

Event comments:

I liked this race, and will probably do it again next year

Too bad I don't know what you look like! I was there too!..

I agree... the splits are a bit whacked out on the results page. I don't even know for sure how LONG the sprint bike ride was...?

Nice work... and a great run, despite the off road/mucky/buggy conditions!!!

Nice race!

That's a great result, considering equipment and training.

Sorry we didn't get to meet up, we definitely had to have passed at some point on the course.  Hehehe.  So many BTers now, it's tough to meet up with everyone at the races, but that's a very very GOOD thing.

What's next for you?  Are you planning on Lake Geneva (the other side) in September?

I'm doing a 1/2 on Sept 25th, so "just" the oly distance on the 10th for me.

We'll have to pick a spot to try and meet up before the race, so we can all get together and figure out what eachother looks like.

See ya there!

Way to crank the swim.  It's the only part I did so I can't comment on the bike and run course.

Yeah, the swim time listed on the results site you posted were a tad OFF.  At least for my time it was.

The splits listed at that site seem strange - my overall time seems right, but all of the individual event times seem off.
