Medals are definately cool!  It's not nerdy to be excited about them.  I still get a thrill when I place.

A good medal story:

Last year one of my teammates and I placed in our age group.  After the race we went to a local bar with a few guys from our club for post race burgers and beers.  We wore our medals, and other people in the bar who had done the race were ohhing and ahhhing over our hardware.  They thought we were major tri studettes.  It was great fun having these guys in their 20s and 30s making such a fuss over two 50 year old ladies.  I guess it also helped that my time was faster then most of those guys. :-)
