Swim
Comments: Much more difficult than I had imagined. This was a 'Try a Tri' so there were many novice folks out there. There was way more kicking, hitting, and swimming over the top of folks than I had imagined. I sat back and let others go ahead until I found a fairly open area to swim in. I passed many folks on the run up to the transition area. Given the conditions I was very pleased with my swim, I finished better than I had expected. What would you do differently?: Really work on my freestyle, was difficult to swim in the big group with any other stroke. I've got 10 weeks to prepare for my full Sprint Tri in Open Water. Be better prepared mentally for the mass chaos of the wading start. Transition 1
Comments: Transition was much improved from my first. Knew not to try and put a shirt on while wet (wore my shirt during the swim). Very pleased with my transition, I 'passed' several folks in the transition area. What would you do differently?: Consider speed laces or perhaps if I can sweet talk the wife get a nice pair of bike shoes and clips. Bike
Comments: Race was won on the bike. I pushed hard and had passed all but one of the other races prior to the turn around. Could have pushed harder coming back in to pass the final racer, but didn't want to kill myself. Personal best on speed. What would you do differently?: Drink more, even though it was a short race I needed the liquid for the run. Transition 2
Comments: Didn't have to change shoes. Was only biker back into the transition area. Racked bike, removed helmet and I was out the other end. What would you do differently?: Not much, jogged into and out of the transition area. Since I was the only person in the area it made for a nice easy transition. Run
Comments: Very difficult to find a pace when you're the only runner out on the course. Had a marshall riding out front on a bike though they weren't really setting a pace. I was about a minute ahead of the next person at this point so there was nothing to judge by. Didn't see another soul until after my turn around point. Distance is a question, was scheduled to be a 2km run, but it's possible it was a 3km run, they announced both distances during the day. What would you do differently?: Drink more water on the bike. Work on taking water while on the run. Figure out how to better set a pace, I ran slow to drop my heart rate back down to my normal run rate of 155bpm. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit and went to see if the wife had come in on the bike. She was already out on the run course when I finished so I walked to a point where I could keep an eye out for her and did some stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing to really push me, not like the marshall on the bike was going to let me pass her. I did well on the swim and bike, but the run was much slower than my training has been. It was getting hot, but I'm sure I could have done better if I wasn't alone on the course. Event comments: This race was really meant to be my first experience at an open water swim. The bike and run were much shorter than the distances I trained for. The race was about 10 minutes late due to the lifeguards, though it went well after that. The experience of the swim gives me some insight for my next Tri in September.
