FS Series

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 39s
Overall Rank = 55/198
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 8/17
Pre-race routine:

What's a routine?...lol 1st race of any kind. I'd planned out a checklist and it all worked, fine.
Event warmup:

None. In my mind, I thought I needed to save every ounce of energy.
Swim
  • 07m 13s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swimming is BY FAR my limiter. I had swum 300YARDS a few times in training....and only immediately leading up to the event. I was completely gassed about 200-225M in....and had to resort to side stroking. I got passed by 2 people in the pool. I passed no one.

One person who passed me passed several others. The other passed only me.
What would you do differently?:

I HAVE to train more and build endurance. no way around this. This is a HUGE concern of mine. I'm going to have to get better at swimming.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

From the mental haze I was in - from being so gassed on the swim, I think my T1 was OK. Everything went pretty smoothly. I passed the guy who was directly behind me (that passed me in the pool)...if only temoprarily (he got me on the bike).
What would you do differently?:

Honestly, if I come out of the water in a better state, I "might" have picked up a precious few seconds. But, I'm not displeased with my T1 time.
Bike
  • 39m 8s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.40 mile/hr
Comments:

I had 2 hiccups on the bike course. #1 - I slowed down at the spot where we were to turn into the T-area on lap 1, because I saw someone turning in. I think a sign would help in this spot (TURN RIGHT ONLY ON 4th LAP). But, it's my responsibility to know the course. #2 - When I turned in on the last lap, a race official told me to keep going straight....lol. I told him it was the end of my 4th lap, and he said..."Oh..OK". Funny, now.
What would you do differently?:

Just know the course, better. I actually bested my projected time by a mph or so.
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

I only did 2 bricks before the race. I ran through this in my head a few times. And, I can't imagine it going much better. I was pleased, here.
What would you do differently?:

Not one thing.
Run
  • 27m 29s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

During my bricks, I realized I run faster than I think I do, coming off the bike. I relied on that. I was right on the edge of blowing up, and the best thing I did all day was dial it down at the right times. Having never run a tri (or ANY race), I would have been happy with anything under 30min., going in. To say I was ecstatic to see an "8" number first (in my minutes/mi.) would be an understatement.
What would you do differently?:

I had to stand by the road at the turnaround to let cyclists pass. I probably (in reality) stood there for 6-7seconds. Nothing I could do.
Post race
Warm down:

Beer

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swimming - PERIOD.

Event comments:

Perfect learning experience. It taught me things I know (need to work on swimming) and 1 thing I didn't....I CAN run better than I thought. I'll get better at both and hopefully can do this race in 2011, faster, with less effort.

I may be wrong. But, I "think" the pool was 25METERS in lieu of 25YARDS. This would have made a difference in the time I submitted.

Nice job- your transitions were pretty quick for your first time! I chuckled at your 25meter vs 25 yard comment. You know, the swim times seem kinda slow to me so maybe you are right. Either way, you survived it :-)

Right on.... Congrats on getting the 1st one under your belt.

I really think you're gonna have a swimming breakthrough soon and you'll scoff at your yardage that you're swimming now.

Feels good to know you can do it, doesn't it....

louiskie....you killed it.  Great job, man.

Thanks for the comments, guys.  I keep sitting here telling myself how much MORE fun this would be, if I didn't have to worry about swimming distances.  I went to the pool this AM....and I'm headed back, this afternoon (then, I'll ride). Need2..... I'm trying, and I hope you're right.

I'm with you on the swimming distance! That would help explain my times being slower here than other pools. I tried checking the subdivisions's website, but it just says "competion size" pool. With the limited precision of a satellite picture, I drew a line from one end to the other and it was much closer to 25 metters than 25 yards!

Great job for any race and especially for your first race! Keep up the good work!

Great job! Super fast bike IMHO and good run. I know you're concerned about your swim, but you beat my swim time for my 1st tri (not that that's hard to do) and you went all out. And, you finished in a better time than more than half the other swimmers. I call that a success.

Jeff it was great to meet you in person! Thanks for the beer. Great job on your first tri.

The swim times are probably slow due to the time mat being placed so far from the pool!

Jeff....you did great man.  Those are terrific first-tri numbers.  You can only get better....and those transitions are ridiculous!

And thanks for choosing a cancer research triathlon.  Great cause!
