Pre-race routine:

Slept better than usual for a night before a race. Only got up once. Upat 5:15, ate cereal and skim milk. Drank a diet pepsi on the way to the site. Was early as usual.
Event warmup:

Road the course twice at an easy pace. Ran a little and swam 200 yds. Drank so Gatorade after marking.
Swim
  • 06m 1s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Passed the person in front of me and was not passed. There was a 1 minute gap behind me which helped me relax, but perhaps a fear of being passed would have made me go faster. My time seems slow compared to my training times.
Transition 1
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Probably should skip the socks as this would save me 20-30 seconds. Had trouble clipping in.
Bike
  • 34m 35s

Comments:

Went ok. I passed a lot of the 40 people that left the pool ahead of me on the first lap. As the race went on more of the inexperienced riders were out and had to maneuver a lot more. On two laps I got caught behind a slow rider leading into the techincal traffic circle and lost time going into the fast down hill. Had issues with two cars. One I yelled at and finally had to get out of the saddle and pass.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Racked bike on the WRONG rack! Realized it after I took off my helmet. Moved the two racks up I needed to be at and went on from there. Probabley cost me 30 seconds. D'oh!
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention!
Run
  • 27m 16s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Had trouble breathing early on and could not find a good steady rhythm. The heat and humidity made it feel like soup out there. Passed a guy at about the 0.7 mile point. He fell in behind me. At the next long uphill he passed me. After the race he thanked me for helping him find a rhythm. To bad I could not find one for myself.

Coming up the final .4 miles, I saw another runner in my age group. Since I did not want to lose a place in my AG I sprinted. Realisitically this was too far out from the end to sprint. I kept telling myself to keep at it as I did not want to fall in my AG! Made it to the end sprinting.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight. The heat and humidity killed me.
Post race
Warm down:

Beer, beer, and beer curtesy of Jeff!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight and the Earth's gravity!

Event comments:

No AG awards at all. Only Overall awards. Kind of s*cks as all the other races acknowledge the AG's.

Nice race!  Sounds like lots of bike traffic on the last loops  - way to be weavin' in an out!  Solid effort, a #3 spot AG, and beer at the end  - you can't complain about that...

Sounds like you dug deep from start to finish!  Way to go!  I always find that if you are going to wear socks it's best to wait for the run... Let your feet have time to dry off.

Hey Doug....

Awesome race, for a "not up to your stds" outing.  I was/am impressed, either way.  Congrats on your AG place.  I'll bronze you a beer can.

Looking forward to seeing you in Raleigh, in August.  I'm hoping you'll ride the Rex course with me, prior to race-day.

p.s. Pray for me to not drown, between now and then......and I'll bring more beers.

Rob,

Great effort and results under less than ideal conditions.  Running in high humidity is tough.

Congrats on the podium finish!

Jeff is cool. He brought lots of lite beer too! BTW, I doubt Jeff will mind me saying this, but his wife is not hard on the eyes. Too bad she does not do triathlon.
