Tri Minnesota Triathlon Racing Series
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 24m 38s
Overall Rank = 113/452
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 5/20
Pre-race routine:

Ate like crap all day Friday and woke up not feeling so good race day. Tried to eat a little peanut butter and wheat but wasn't happening. Found DJDavey and hung with him for awhile. Then found Jared and some of the guys I swim with. Nice relaxing morning.
Event warmup:

Took the bike out for a short spin and then did a short swim. Wind was blowing pretty good and on a big lake like Minnetonka it was having a big effect. Did a short swim and drank a lot of water.
Swim
  • 13m 22s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Tough swim. Drank a lot of water and felt pretty crappy. Despite that I powered through and stayed focused. I maintained my rythem and just went from one buoy to the next. Pretty happy with my time and rank on the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Work on bilateral breathing. Drank a lot of water due to only sighting to the left and huge waves from that direction.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

I am notorius for slow transition times and was actually quite pleased with both times.
Bike
  • 43m 19s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.78 mile/hr
Comments:

I don't remember this course being so hilly. Nothing major but just a lot of small climbers. Wouldn't have been bad except for the wind. Wind + hills + clydesdale do not make for a good combo. Plus I almost had a redneck in a truck take me out at an intersection patrolled by 2 sherriffs and a volunteer. Had to come to a complete stop and crank it up again. The sherriff was NOT pleased with Jethro one bit.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Really? Did I do that?
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Run
  • 24m 36s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my only dissapointment for the day. I did have a good run so I should not complain BUT I did have another mental letdown and it cost me a podium finish. With half a mile to go I allowed myself a 30 second walk break and then slowed down to 9 minute miles. Shortly after 2 guys chugged by me who were obviously in my division. Sure enough, I missed 3rd place by 34 seconds and 4th by 10 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

There was no reason to slow down with only half a mile to go. I need to get mentally stronger and learn how to gut it out in the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with Kelly and the kids as well as fellow BT'ers

Solid times. Nice job in the wind today. I hear you on wind+hills+clydesdale, although your bike pace looks like it was still pretty darn good given the wind.

Bummer about the wind!   You still did great, especially with a difficult swim like that.  I probably couldn't have done it.

Good job!  That wind today was tough and all I was doing was sitting on my couch.  I struggle with the mental toughness too, esp on the run.

no matter what, nice race. And remember, it is the races that don't always go as planned that we learn more from. So, at HOLT, make it your goal to not walk a step and to finish strong....I know you have it in you!
