Total Time = 1h 41m 53s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Clyde over 40
Age Group Rank = 10/14
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00 AM. Two english muffins with whipped honey. Throw stuff in car - off to meet Johnny for long drive up to race. We got there in plenty of time. Ate a banana about 10min before race meeting.
Event warmup:

1 mile run, ez; 200m swim...
Swim
  • 06m 1s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Sent in a time of 6:18 for seeding. I was off. I passed the swimmer ahead of me at the first wall. Continued passing - probably 10-12 people in total, I had to hesitate a few time due to oncoming traffic. I could have been a bit faster... I am still stoked though 1:50 / 100yds for the swim! Even better was that I was not completely out of breath when I was done! Extremely happy with the swim!
What would you do differently?:

Seed myself better - confidence!
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Tried to move through transition quickly, but ended up being slower than I wanted to be.
What would you do differently?:

I had my shoes, etc tucked too far back under the rack, pull them foward fro next time. I forget that Jack's races have super tall racks (my bike hangs and doesn't touch the ground when hung from seat front) so when you put your shoes, etc by the front wheel, you are really too far back into the rack...
Bike
  • 46m 48s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 17.69 mile/hr
Comments:

It is uphill right after the mount line. I had set what I thought was the right gear Could not get into pedals, my racing shoes are slick and I could not get myself attached. At least I didn't fall over! Finally got going - rolling right along, small incline, short descent and then I see a big hill... I started poppin gears to, but probably not enough. Turned and tried to pound it down hill. Many more hills, some a little longer and not steep, some short and sharp. I actually passed people on some of the hills, tried to keep pushing it hard as I could. I could feel my quads starting to fatigue (not enough easy gear spinnign up the hills...) Last downhill I pushed it and hit 35.2 mph and then had to start braking for the turn up the hill to transition...
What would you do differently?:

Not push so hard up the hills in low gear! Also, use other shoes next time, not the slick bottom shoes that will allow for pedaling on top of the pedals as I get out transition.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Running stuff was too far back into the rack as described above. Drop stuff off, put socks on and go...
What would you do differently?:

Skip socks, pull stuff out further
Run
  • 44m 52s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 12m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile was mostly uphill. I hit 11:15 on the first mile. I was not prepared for the trail running, as it was up and down and twists and turns. Probably ended up at 21min for the 1.5 mile around the lake (even) Came back up to the aid station at 1 mile to go, it was a slight uphill for 1/4 mile or so and then downhill mostly to the finish. Don't have a split on the last mile, but it was probably close to the first mile pace. Tried to sprint it in to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Practice on some more trail run, it was way different than I imagined.. Also work on more bricks and run endurance...
Post race
Warm down:

Try to breath, try to cool down, try to hydrate... wander around...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Gear changes on the bike, trail running skills, general endurance, etc

Event comments:

Straight forward Ironhead race. Well organized, Subway sandwiches at the finish line. Had a small bit and then opted for a trip to Hooters for a blackend Mahi sandwich and wings and, yes, iced tea :)

Nice race, Andy.  Sub 2:00 min/100 on the swim is awesome.  I'm still trying to get there.  Well done!

congrats on the race.  you really kicked some butt on the swim.  Trail running is so tough especially if you're not used to it.  some people change their run styles a little off road and makes them more tired (like me).
