Success is when I'm smiling like an idiot during the entire race because I'm having a great time and putting in a solid effort.

Yesterday my 13 year old son asked if he could go running with me (instead of playing his PS3).  I've been trying to get him the SBR (any of the 3) for quite some time now.

Success is him wanting to run with me and asking when we can go again!
Success is him asking "Dad, why aren't you breathing hard and sweating like I am"

By spelling.

It's not spelling, nor punctuation, nor grammar. It's improper use of a homonym. (As long as everyone's being all pedantic about it.)

Technically the OP's sentence was spelled and punctuated correctly. Just used the wrong word. Twice. Out of 6 words.

Does that count as success? :D

Now we've lost proper capitalization, punctuation and spelling and the use of the first ellipsis is questionable.

Don't be so hard on the kid.

You want to write "you're" not "your". And I make this mistake ALL the time, along with many others.

And, we've moved on to run-on sentences.

Enjoying the journey is a better measure of success than suffering and never reaching an unattainable goal.

I firmly believe that you have about :30 to decide wether you had a good race or not.  When you cross the finish line, ask yourself 'Did I give a full effort?'

If the answer is Yes, then you had a great race.

If the answer is No, then you have room for improvement.

Note that this is done before you see any results or have had a chance to compare times, etc.  That small window after you cross the line is the only time you can give yourself a true answer to the question, "Did I have a good race".

This is a great answer.  I felt great when I finished.  I will always try to keep this in my head and then leave it all there.

Success:

#1- making it through the training program and to the starting line, healthy and ready.

#2- not injuring myself during the race.

#3- having fun.

I started this a few years ago to have fun and keep my weight off.....
Success can be measured by....did I give a good effort?  Did I have fun?  Did I train smart and stay injury free?  Did I make wise decisions throughout the race?  If I made it through the swim without backstroking or kayak hugging that's a really good day
