Bicycle & Fitness Aquathlon - Aquathlon

Key Biscayne, Florida
United States

Overcast
Total Time = 59m 40s
Overall Rank = 10/29
Age Group = masters
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Did the coffee thing before we left, got the kids squared away with Dunkin Donuts, and away we went to Key Biscayne!
Event warmup:

Easy swim in the ocean. Already was looking brutal. The ocean there is so shallow for so long that you have to run at least 100 yards in ankle-to-knee deep water before you can even start dolphin diving. Then there's the current. VERY windy still, courtesy of Hurricane Dennis and the current felt tough even in warmup.

Then later did some jogging with a few intervals.
Run
  • 14m 1s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m  min/mile
Comments:

Flew on the way out due to heavy tailwind, but then had a challenge fighting the headwind on the way back. It's not often the wind is significant enough to affect the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...did pretty well.
Transition 1
  • 00m 21s
Comments:

Did quite well. Tucked my bib number into my shorts before I even got to transition so I wouldn't have to remove it (and have to remember to put it back on later!)
Swim
  • 29m 36s
  • 1000 yards
  • 02m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Buoys were very small, maybe two feet high. Absolutely no chance to see them until I was relatively near them. Most of the markers were actually the regular white posts that mark where the water gets deeper. WHAT A NIGHTMARE! I can't believe they actually expected us to sight those things!
What would you do differently?:

I believe I mentioned in a previous RR to NEVER RACE IN KEY BISCAYNE AGAIN!
Transition 2
  • 00m 22s
Comments:

Jordan was waiting for me on shore as I got out of the water and ran with me to transition...that was WAY cool.
Run
  • 15m 20s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

In the last 200 yards or so of the run as I started to pick up the pace to sprint I started hearing footprints behind me. Sounded like a guy, but I couldn't let a mere MAN beat me, could I? So I really pumped it but I could hear his cadence was quicker than mine and he just nipped me at the line. Well, I couldn't hold on, but he had to work to beat me!
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged back along course to cheer on another friend.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

THAT STINKING SWIM!

Event comments:

Very disorganized. Race started about 15 minutes late, and although they had chip timing, it was all messed up. When prelim results were posted I found I was 3rd of 3 in my age group with a time of 0:00:00 (I saw that result with a good 10-12 others as well). I went and spoke to the timers about it and based on that prelim report my real time should've put me first in my AG by several minutes. But when awards finally came out I was 2nd. I'm assuming someone else faster than me was originally put in the wrong group and put back where she belonged. However since they never posted a final result page I'll never know. I didn't bother to ask because it was such a long wait just to get my silver medal the kids were antzy and wanted to go to the Seaquarium.

However, my goal of top 4 in my AG was met. This race was a qualifier for the world championship aquathlon in Honolulu in October.

Hey Sharon,

I knew this was going to be a tough swim with the effects from Hurricane Dennis. Add that to the lovely Key Biscayne currents, and you have one tough swim! Way to go for pushing hard through it. Your runs look great, and congrats for finishing in the top 4 of your AG!!

That's the way to do it!  Nice buoys, white 2 footers?  That's how people get lost.

But way to persevere through lousy weather to get the prize.  And you ARE starting to get your groove back.

I feel for you with those currents.  I can't believe they even had the thing with Dennis affecting everything.  Glad you posted great runs and made it out of the water safe.    Congrats on the podium finish.

Oh, BTW...I looked at the race results in the paper today...although they announced me 2nd in my age group at the awards yesterday, it appears in the paper that I'm 2nd master.  I don't know which at this point.  VERY confusing.
