Subject: How do you feel after riding 100 miles
I just rode my first century today and at the end actually felt okay.  (If I had to run, I could have, but don't know how far.)  After you ride 100+, how do you feel?  After the bike portion of an IM, provided I pace myself correctly, should I feel refreshed and ready to run or are my legs going to be "dead".  I have three more 100+ rides before my race and was just curious what I am in for.  Did it get a little easier after the first?  Also, I am not looking for the "right answer", just your personal experiences.  I know person is different, routes are different, pacing is different, etc.

After your next 100 go run a 5k and see how you feel. The legs should loosen up a bit after you are going for a while. I haven't ever done it, so I can offer no personal anecdote.

I just did my first century two days ago.  I was certainly tired, and my butt was a bit sore, but I had no problem going for a cooldown walk.  A 5k at that point would have been really unpleasant but doable.  I was sore yesterday, but feel mostly fine today, just a little bit stiff in the hips.  Went for a quick ride to loosen up and felt great.

I think in general terms how you feel would be based on how hard you road the 100, how much climbing and the amount of rest at water stops.  After 100 miles, I think your butt will always hurt a bit though.

Wouldn't a straight G be an I?

My legs are tired after a century, not dead just tired, but I've never done one with the expectation of running afterword.

Ask me again after November

I've done several centuries (don't know how many), and I've felt anywhere from 'a little tired' to 'can I just lie down right here?'

In my IM last year I felt good coming off the bike, and was able to run most of the marathon, albeit slowly.

I'm usually just so happy to be off the bike it doesn't matter what comes next.  I usually have to remind myself to slow down for the first few miles because I feel great.  If only I could hold that feeling for an entire marathon after the ride.

I did my first this week-end.  It was a really hilly 100 with over 6000 feet of climbing.  This November I will be doing a very flat century + 12 but it will be very flat.  Previously my longest ride was about 65.

My butt did not hurt at all.  With the climbing I was out of the saddle a lot.  I also purchased some Desoto 400 mile bibs that really helped.  My legs were tired but not completely useless.  I really should have tried to run and see how I felt.

I need to do a flat century and see how I feel.  I need to find some safe, flat ground to do it on.

After my first 100 miler I felt great. I rode another 100 the next day. The rides were during the MS150 and they had an optional extra 25 each day to make it a century each day. Since I had people sponsoring me by the mile I did the extra miles. Both days featured some very significant climbing. When I did this I wasn't really into running that much, but I could have gone a few miles.

after the ironman part of the bike was done. i planned to walk the first  half mile or so. which i did. i felt real good off the bike. but the key comming off the bike is drinking water evey 15 min or so and good nutrient. if you like riding in big gears the last mile or so . drop the gears to a lower one and pick up your spinning rate.  one last thing after riding i changed from tri shorts to running shorts and a lite tank top. my run time was 4:15 . which i was happy with.  also tri a few big bricks , one i like is  bike 25 run 6 bike 25 run 6. i gives you a different feel  than a 50b 12 run brick. good luck..

After my IM on May 1, my legs felt surprisingly good, the main thing that hurt was my glutes from the heavy climbing.

During training its hard to gauge how your legs will feel coming off the bike in the race since during the biggest training loads you're so fatigued. Taper will do wonders.

I have only done 1 century a few years ago and ran 1 mile after just because I could.  Actually felt pretty good considering I was starting to cramp on the bike.

Hopefully come 8/29 I can run a marathon after 112 miles without hurting really bad.

Pacing makes a huge difference on how I feel at end of 100 miles normally pretty good and satisfied that I accomplished another century.

I did an local IM distance race as a biker in a relay and it was a 4 lap course each lap seemed to go faster and faster from my perception, it came to me then I could ride really as long as I wanted. I had been considering a 24 hour bike race, and as my bike in that IM went on I realized it was only about my mind and I could do it if I wanted.

Usually like I need to eat a cow and drink a beer.  That takes care of my grumbly tummy and dehydration.

After my first century I wante ice packs on my butt for about 3 days.  Unable to do much of anything.  Though I did swim the next day and may have run.

After my second one my butt was fine and I was able to ride within a couple days.  I was toast in terms of a run immediately after both of them but able to run the next day I think.

Last year after my first century I felt pretty good except for my butt and my wrists.  Someone gave me a high five and it almost made me cry.  But the next day I competed and won all 6 swim events in the Nevada Senior Olympics.  This years century (well, only 80 miles actually), I finished ate Mexican food with the others and then went to the pool for my normal 4000 meter workout.

I just love swimming after a bike ride, it's like recovery for me.  I wish they would change Tri's to run, bike, swim.

Never been further than 33+mi..  Until Sat., I'd never run more than 8mi..

The longer I train - and the longer distances I go.....the more respect I have for the distances I hear of you guys racing/training.  "In awe" is appropriate.  It's gonna be a while before my body will accept this!

Rock on!

I think it depends on how many base miles you've done, mentality, pace line, nutrition, terrain, and fitness.

I took my friend out for her first bike ride ever ($35 per day for a $3,500 woman's bike). She's running her 3rd marathon but this was her first bike ride ever and it was at a distance of 63.7 miles (mostly flat). She was beat at the end of the day and passed out that night (whereas i'm use to riding and went partying later).

So I think it's a combination of those things. The pace was 18 mph at the start for about 16 miles then it dropped down to 10 to 12 about the rest of the way (the distance and speed was so impressive for her first ride).

So if you guys feel like wimpy out at a distance, my friend did her first ride at 63.7 miles.

I've ridden a bunch of centuries and how I felt afterward (and how fast I completed it) was greatly dependent on weather, terrain and my training.  I've never run following a century though and the thought of doing so makes me think that an IM is probably not in my near future! Surprised

My first century was an organized community ride and I was ready to get out of the saddle around mile 70, but got a bit of a second wind after 80.  (That seems to be a pattern for some reason, actually.)  Could have run, but that wasn't the point of the day.

I've bricked after a handful of 100+ mile rides (at least one of them with a lot of climbing) during training for 2 IMs since then...no long runs, but in every case, I was surprised at my pace:  Adrenaline was flowing and my legs had been going at an 80-90 bpm cadence for 6-7 hours and the problem was more holding back than being able to run.  Not that I wasn't tired, just that my engine was revved up, so to speak.  I can't see feeling "refreshed," though.

In my last IM, I came off the bike in bad shape (dehydrated, cramping), but still went out and ran the first 6.5 miles okay (until the dehydration caught up to me again).
