Sunny
Total Time = 1h 12m 34s
Overall Rank = 3/162
Age Group = F35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/21
Pre-race routine:

Up around 5am, ate some oatmeal and coffee then off to the race for setup w/ Tony. We signed up much later for the race then usual so we had a later pool start time. We watched Karla race since she was doing the Elite division. She crossed the finish line in 1st just as we were getting in line for the pool start. GO KARLA!
Event warmup:

Tony and I ran for about 10-15 min to get the blood flowing. Of course, then we had to wait around for 35-45min for the swim start.
Swim
  • 07m 49s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

Pool swim was going to be some squirrely circle swim based on a projected time chosen by the swimmer right before starting. Luckily that idea was quickly bagged and they went back to the 2 swimmers per lane. I started off feeeling good and had a great 100 then I started to feel the burn of trying to sprint a 300yd swim. I definitely slowed by the last 100 and hopped out of the pool in around 7:35. Shocker! One of these days I would like to be able to swim. Oh well ran down the sidewalk to transition.
What would you do differently?:

I was 50 sec. off my goal which is huge in 300yd pool sprint. I swear is 2:15 100s that crazy a goal. Isn't fat supposed to float? I suppose being consistent about completing my swim workouts might be a good start!
Transition 1
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

A little too slow for the distance but I was trying to catch my breath a bit for my stellar pool effort. 23 seconds too many!
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to swim!
Bike
  • 34m 32s
  • 11 miles
  • 19.11 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike was good. I was super happy w/ it. Thought I went a little faster than final MPH but I gave it all I had and felt strong. The temp was already very high and I was struggling with lowering my HR/respiration. Rode in aero, took turns fast and only got passed by one guy - a fellow NCVC person.
What would you do differently?:

Great bike - keep training to get even faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Pretty quick transition but I did run pass my rack b/c my bright blue shoes were covered up. Lost about 5-8 seconds here.
What would you do differently?:

Mark row and know where I am going.
Run
  • 28m 16s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

I was hot as hell and so was the temp. My breathing was out of control and I was trying to figure out if I could hit my time goal. I quickly figured out that wasn't happening as I struggled through the run. I couldn't even figure out my pace. I was more out of it than I thought. When I saw my split, I realized how much the heat hammered me. I ran my half marathon in the heat at Lonestar faster than this 5k.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure - it was hot. I was more than 3 min. off my run goal. That was pretty much 85% of the time I lost to my goal. I walked each walk station and got 2 cups. One for drinking and one for dumping over my head.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and tried to cool off. Ate a little but not really interested in what they had. I missed the Einstein bagels!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat

I was disappointed with my overall time but did manage to be about a 1 1/2 min faster than last year. I just thought I could be much faster this year. I did notice that times were slower on average than last year so the heat must have really been tough on everyone.

I was happy w/ the AG win! My first so I won't complain about that. ;-)

Event comments:

As always a great race. Super beginner friendly. I will keep coming back! And woo hoo for chip timing. And putting your age standing on the overall list as times go up. Why can't Set Up Events figure this out?

With your running ability who cares about the swim.  Congratulations!  And I agree with the SetUp comment.  I don't know how long I stand at those sheets and try to count the people ahead of me in my age group.

P.S.  Very hot new avatar!!

Reall great job Sam!!!  Just remember when it's hot your pacing is bound to be slower, especially on the run.  The fact you won your AG is a testament of your effort!
