Subject: First tri done and already looking at next yr I finished my first triathlon this weekend and I am completely hooked! I met my very modest goal of finishing in under 2hrs but I'm already looking at next yr and wanting to shave about 30 minutes off.
750m swim= It took me 30 minutes. I was very unprepared for open water and spent a lot of time and energy doggie paddling and backstroking and floating and treading water. I know I can get it down to 15-18 minutes next year bc I'm hiring an OWS coach and working w/ him to get me where I need to be.
T1 and T2= 11 minutes for both. Don't know what the heck happened (actually I do, in T1 I was beat from the swim and walked slowly to my very far transition spot. 7 minutes there and T2 was 4 minutes). Lots of room here for improvement as well.
11.8 mile bike= 40 minutes on my Trek FX 7.2 flat handle road/hybrid bike. I felt good the whole ride, felt like I left quite a bit on the road and could have shaved another few minutes off. My question here is how much time can I reasonably shave off with a solid yr of cycling 3x a week, upgrading to clipless (I've been using reg. pedals, not even toe clips/cages) and maybe investing in a true road bike (looking at uComp or Dolce). I've found that of the 3 events, my true love is cycling.
5k= 34 minutes. About as expected as I've been a solid 11m mile runner all summer. Still bouncing back from a microfracture and ACL surgery and just started running again in May. But honestly, I've never been very fast, even as a teen/young adult. As a 35 yo who has never been fast, is a sub 30 5k by next yr doable??
Anyways, thank you BT for all the advice and encouragement the past 2 yrs on my long road to becoming a triathlete. I am still on Cloud 9 and probably will be for a long time
