Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5am, ate a bagel w/ PB - back to my standard pre-race meal. Loaded up the truck and headed out to the race.
Event warmup:

Thought about doing something but didn't. I did try and stretch and move around a bit.
Swim
  • 35m 27s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a pretty good swim for me. There is some time added in b/t laps for runnnig from the exit to the dock and jumping in. I believe each lap was at the same pace. I didn't freak at all of the vegetation even though I wondered if I was fish in a net at times. Sighting and swimming straight was better on the first lap.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing but I'd really like to figure out how to swim. I just don't understand why it is so easy for some and so foreign for others.
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Awesome T1 considering I passed 7 people in my AG and I never saw them again. After aplits were posted I finally understood why I saw so few people in my AG but still ended up 2nd.
What would you do differently?:

I took time to put my cap and googles in my bag but that didn't really matter. It was a pretty efficient transition.
Bike
  • 1h 27m 42s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 16.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode this course the best I could have given my current conditioning and skill. It was tough - hilly, technical and demanding.

I probably could have used more liquid nutrition. I finished my aero bottle by mile 15. Pretty good considering there were plenty of times when I could not drink either due to major wind sucking up a hill or trying to stay upright going 35mph down a hill.

My bike computer died right at mile 10 and 30min. so I wasn't able to monitor my speed. Didn't really matter though.

I was proud of the way I paced the long climb at the end. I found a comfy gear and starting chugging away. The 2nd half of the hill was easier than the first.

I was passed by one person in my AG on the bike. She was the winner and came out of the water 12th. Look out if either of us learn how to swim! LOL
What would you do differently?:

It is one course that a person would benefit from practicing. I'm really glad we drove it. I would not want to be surprised out there.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Another good, quick transition
What would you do differently?:

Run

Comments:

I started off in ok shape but a hill came at me right off the bat. That did nto do good things for my HR. I walked a few of the easrly hills taking in fluids and got water at the aid stations. I tried to keep moving in hopes of breaking 3 hrs. I used my first lap to get my HR, body temp and breathing under control. That plan worked out. I had a negative split, passed 2 people in my AG and finished super strong. It was great to hear/see Linda cheering for me on both laps! Thanks Linda. :-)
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Got some cold water and an icy towel. Found Tony and Karla - they were about 15 min. ahead of me. Karla got some great pics of me and Tony. I figured I had finished middle of the pack so I was really surprised to see a 2 next to my name. Karla and I waited for awards then got a shower and headed to a yummy lunch in Frederick.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills - I am not a strong hill climber either on the bike or foot. Just keep getting stronger and building my base.

But overall, I was happy w/ the race even before I saw the results. My nutritional intake was back on track and I could feel a big difference in my performance. I felt strong for the entire race and I can't get faster until I am able to stay strong.

Event comments:

Ken put on another great local race. Lots of help and water out on course. The bike was tough and run not easy after the bike. But nice to ride out in the country. Very organized and super quick w/ the results.

Great job Sam!  Glad to see you got some hardware for your efforts.  I know how you feel about the swim and how it is so easy for some people - I feel the same way about the run

Nice work! Good job on the bike... excellent pacing on what sounds like a tough course. And then your execution on the run was perfect: you took the time to bring the HR down, find a rhythm, and then built to finish strong = a negative split, passing a couple AGers, and taking home some HARDWARE. Well done.

GREAT JOB SAM!!!!! You have become so good at running off the bike, it's your strength now!

Let's make a pact to keep working on the swim over the off season.  Think what a force you will be then!

Another attack of the seaweed monster. Don't you love it?  Every time you run I am so impressed.  Reading your race reports reminds me of the power of a strong run.  Great job and thanks for being such an inspiration.
