Transition. You can loose a fair amount of time by not being efficient in your transitions.

Transitions.

Also, I think triathlon is actually about 8 disciplines.

I'd say the 5th discipline is running uphill on sand barefoot.

Agreed on transitions.  Fast transitions are free speed!

Transition. (Spoken as a sprint-distance racer for whom race day nutrition is not all that important!)

Putting your wetsuit on

Depends on the distance and conditions....

Olys and sprints = transitions

Half-IM and IM = nutrition/hydration

Well, since I got the DVD called "Mastering the 4th Discipline - Triathlon Transitions" I believe it's the transition. I'm usually in the last group out of the water for my age group but in the top 5 females overall in the transition category. I've obviously almost mastered the 4th discipline. Now I need to master the other 3.

Recovery.  How many athletes lack the discipline to follow through on it?

Transition.  It gets it's own timing and ranking in most races.

Nutrtion, recovery, getting a wetsuit on or off - all those are really more training or racing strategies.  No one ranks you on how much fluid you took in, or how many calories you used.

Post race pizza?

Seriously though, when I first read the subject, I thought 'nutrition'....but really that's not so much an issue for sprints and olys.

So where does that leave peeing on the bike, #6?
And what about wardrobe coordination?
I'm so confused.

Easy:

For shorter courses - transition

For longer (half & full IM) - nutrition
