I'm shopping for tires and would like your suggestions.  I want to lean toward the raceable/training clincher rather than a heavier but more durable trainer.

Any favorites?

You're going to have to look hard to beat this price and these are one of the most commonly recommended tires. Oh, this price is for a pair of tires:

I was just reading reviews of these on biketiresdirect.com and it seems they are very highly regarded.  Thanks for the killer price!

I'd suggest that you take the more objective approach and review the ccr data listed in the link:

I think it depends on exactly what your looking for, but on my road bike I use specialized armadillo tires and I love them! No flats and almost 2000 miles on them and they still look new. They are slightly heavier than other tires but I use my road bike for my training rides and have no problem keeping up on pace line group rides avg 23-24mph

I don't believe in such a thing as a "racable/trainable" tire.

There are racing tires and training tires.

I agree with you. I just run race tires all the time.  However if there is a raceable/traininable tire, it is probably that Conti GP4000S.  Pretty fast and pretty flat resistant and decent in the wet and dry. Great price for the pair.

I ride on 23mm Conti GP4000s (and but them at PBK, also) .... great tires....  but I wonder if I am not giving up a little speed in my races.

Any recommendations for a faster clincher race tire?

I generally get stuff from them between 4 days and 6 days later. They get to my mailbox faster than most of the things I order from the states and I'm on the East Coast. Between that, their prices and free shipping, I tend to look at PBK before I look at any of the Stateside sites.

I'm getting these too. Which tubes do you guys recommend that fit well with these (commonly recommended, good durability, but not TOO heavy) that I can also buy on this site?

The conti light tubes are butyl but they only weight 63g apparently. Latex tubes are in the 70g range so they're comparable. The conti tubes will hold air better, though. Dunno about flat resistance.

But the latex tubes will still yield better rolling resistance.

I don't believe in such a thing as a "racable/trainable" tire.

There are racing tires and training tires.

Sorry, but complete disagree with you. The GP4000S doesn't wear out that quick, I don't get punctures and the feel very nice... why would I not race and train on the same tire?!

Based on the advice from BTers I bought a set of GP4000S.  They will be my training and race tires.  Just one long ride so far.

I ended up getting them new on eBay fairly cheap.  They were right at $93 with tax and shipping.

enjoy,

Because, according to the spreadsheet linked above, you're giving up about 2.5 watts per wheel by using the GP4000s, even with latex tubes. Maybe not huge, but easier than gaining 5 watts through training.

I race and train with the GP4000s, BTW. Mainly because I'm too cheap too own two sets of tires and too lazy to change them out on race day. I'm considering doing that next year, though.

this.

*Free* speed is free speed. Nothing wrong with 4000s' (as a matter of fact that's what I train on) but, they don't hold up to an aerowing or supersonic when going fast is your #1 priority.

...and good puncture resistant tubes that aren't too heavy? All agree on the Continental Race 28 Light Inner Tube, Short Valve 700c  for regular road bike wheels?

Edit: Another question: What's the difference between the GP 4000 S and the Triathlon tire?
