maria40nc - 2010-11-11 11:30 AM Thanks Patrick!  I served in the Air Force and miss the ole military days.  I didn't even get today off!  But we did have a nice Veteran's Day ceremony here.

Your avatar would make a good M dot Tat!

Maria;
WHEN I finish my first IM, this is a distinct possibility. bar92, a friend of mine that did her first IM last week, told me the same thing. I wanted something to put on hats and shirts to represent my fight against heart disease, and this is what I came up with.
Thanks... and thanks again.

OK, everybody -- remember to go respond to the Active.com email about the waivers and blah, blah, blah information within the week. Only then will you get the final confirmation email.

It is still somewhat numbing to read
"Congratulations! You are now registered for 2011 Ford Ironman Florida."

Alright, let's get this party started!

Got in!  This is my first IM.
How soon should I be booking a place to stay?  What's the most relaxing place that is still really close to the transition area?

I would suggest the Sunbird Condos which are right next door on the West side of the Boardwalk.  Our family has owned a unit there for years.  There are 1 and 2 bedroom units there and it is quiet but close to transition.

One of the advantages will be the fact that it is gated, so there is no problem with parking.

Would love to have a good group to stay there.  The units can be rented by the sunbird office and also Royal American, which is based inside the Boardwalk.

A couple of things I learned last week...
1. If you are willing to spend a little extra for the space, having an extra bedroom to lay out all the bags (T1, T2, Bike Special Needs, Run Special Needs, morning/Post-Race Clothes) without worrying about tripping over them or leaving something out, really works well. Keeps you organized, yet all your important needs are out of the way of family space, etc. Some of us are anal retentive about organization...
2. Take a look at the vrbo.com website. You can look at private houses and condos all over PCB, most of which are close to the race site. Lots of options, including the Sunbird which Plainsman mentions above.

Did you register on-site on Sunday? The original confirmation Sunday refers to "You will be able to come back to Active to complete your registration starting Friday, November 12th." which is an email you should have received from "Ironman Athlete Services" where you have to initial the waivers and give them address and emergency contact information. This is done through Active.com with a no-fee-charged receipt after you submit the info. The emails were to go out today.

Had me a little nervous too as I didn't receive an email that needed a response.  I also signed up online.

Thanks for clarifying.

I am in, this is my first IM too. What kind of training plans are other first timers following? I know BT has a couple, and there is a beginner plan on active.com, just wondering what else is out there. Also, anyone going with some coaching to help the process along?

Thanks,

Glenn

I am in for IMFL 11 and it will be my first at the IM distance.  Volunteered this year so that I could be there for onsite registration and see the course.  I did my very first sprint triathlon three years ago at Panama City Beach.

Best of luck to everyone over the next year of training.

Glenn - I used the beginner plan from BT and it was great with one exception.  It was a little light on the run.  I may try it again, but swap a swim day for an extra run day.  My longest run was 18 miles, one time.  Personally, I don't think that was quite enough.  Especially since I am not a true runner.  Other than that, I thought it was great.  I am a swimmer so that was easy and I felt great getting off the bike too.

Hey guys, I made a little you tube video of some of my pics from IMFLA 2010  if anyone is interested.  I know I spent countless hours looking at other peoples videos before the race so I thought I would share.

This is my first attempt at something like this, but I am happy with the result.  I can't figure out how to get the speaker icon off of two slides, I don't have enough bike pics and the quality on you tube doesn't do some of the real pics in power point justice, but here it is.

Triathlete Magazine’s Essential Week-By-Week Training Guide: Plans, Scheduling Tips, And Workout Goals For Triathletes Of All Levels is the book my neighbor used for her two IMs and I plan to use it as well. She said that the run was light so she was going to sub HAl Higdons marathon training. Really pumped to start the training. I am doing my first marathon in March and that training starts TODAY.

Hey guys, the reason why most IM training plans run training is light is due to the average ability of a typical athlete to recover from a hard training (like a long run).  Most people cannot adequately recover from 18mile+ runs to get the most out of the rest of their training.  Don't focus too much on the distances but more on the quality of the training.  It's better to be slightly under-trained than over trained for an IM, especially your first.
