Pre-race routine:

This was the 2nd year that 3 families on our street went down to OBX for this race. Last year I was just off MCM so I stayed back and watched the kids while Sam and another neighbor ran the Marathon and another neighbor did the half. This year we all did the half for bragging rights on the street.

We drove down on Friday morning and when we arrived the wind was crazy. We were all worried that the weather would continue until the race.

Got in a 20 minute run on Saturday and running with the wind was great, running into it my HR was up about 20BPM.
Event warmup:

Race morning was a bit chilly but no wind. Ate a bowl of oatmeal and a bananna.

Got dropped off near the start and Sam and I did a 10 minute warmup to get the heart and legs moving, ate a gel at the start line.

Comments:

As always with running races for me I have no idea how I am going to do. Last stand alone half marathon was Shamrock in March 2009 so really had nothing to base this on.

The plan was to start the first 3 miles at 8:00 and then see how things were going and drop down to 7:45 until mile 10 then run with whatever I had left for the rest.

Started off in the 2nd corral 6:00 - 8:00 pace. Right off the bat I was running under 8:00 and had to hold back to let everyone running faster go and just settle into a pace.

First 3 miles went by in a blur, HR was steady and I felt good but as always I had no idea how long that would last so instead of dropping down to a 7:45 pace I just stayed at my 7:50 - 8:00 pace I had been running for the first 3 miles.

Miles 3 - 10 were pretty uneventful, there were some nice parts of the run by the water and the golf course. Back on the main road I just kept chugging along, HR steady still and bridge looming.

Got to the bridge and realized that it wasn't really that steep so kept my pace running up then took off once I hit the peak.

Last 3.24 miles

7:44
7:36
7:14
6:29

Finished strong, passed quite a few people in those last few miles, I felt great. Hit the porta potty, got my picture taken with the pirate and waited for everyone else to finish.

One of our neighbors was sand bagging and finished ahead of Sam by a few minutes but she still PR'd and beat our other neighbor so good day all around.

What would you do differently?:

I was very happy with this run. Only think would be to run faster earlier. If I had enough in me to run a 22 something 5k at the end I should have run faster earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around to wait for our ride. Went out to breakfast with the neighbors. Relaxed a bit in our house then took the kids to Lazer tag which turned out to be a blast.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing.

Event comments:

This is a fun race, there were spectators throughout the run and a fun finish area in Manteo.

Nicely done.  Great management of pacing at the start, and bragging rights to boot.   (I totally know what you mean about not knowing what pacing to do at the start.)  Good job.

Great job.  Glad the wind wasn't a problem.  You never know what you're going to get at the beach.  Maybe next year I'll make it down.
