Pre-race routine:

Went to a wedding the night before, so I didn't get a lot of sleep. Woke up at 5:30am ate a bowl of Vector and left my house at 6:00am to pick up Heidi. Arrived at the race site at 6:30am and picked up our timing chips.

I ate a fruit bar, 30 minutes before the race began.
Event warmup:

It was a hot day already, so I didn't have any problem staying warm. Did some light stretching.

Started out running slowly.

Comments:

Ranking was 68/73 females.

Well I wasn't really racing today. I ran with Heidi who had been training for this run for 15 weeks. It was an awesome accomplishment for her. 15 weeks ago, she could only run 5km around the track and she was running very very slowly.

We started out slowly and settled into the run. We were at the very back at the half way point, but Heidi was looking good and fresh. I had no doubts at this point that we would be able to run the whole thing.

At the half way point, we passed four people. Then we passed another two in the next couple miles. A couple of miles from the finished we passed one person, then two more. It was great motivation for Heidi. I kept saying, hey Heidi, let's catch those people just up ahead and we did.

It was very hot out during this run. I'm glad that it started at 7:30am. After 1 hour and 10 minutes of running, Heidi and I both had a GU gel. We were at a water stop, so we washed it down with water. After another 45 minutes, Heidi had another GU. We stopped for water or eload at each stop. The last 2 miles were smoking hot. Some nice residents had their sprinklers out and they went onto the road, so we ran through them on the way back. One lady was standing out on her front yard with a hose, so we had her spray us down.

This was a really fun run for me as it was put on by my cycling club. I knew every single volunteer. So everytime we passed a volunteer they said, "Hi Jen." Then we had a quick chat while Heidi kept running and then I caught up to Heidi. Heidi said that she felt like she was running with a celebrity. ;) At the finish line, the announcer knew who I was, so he called out mine and Heidi's names as we were coming up to the finish line. Everyone else had to be called by number. Calling our names resulted in a lot of cheering. I got a lot of, "you can do it" from the volunteers on the course and I felt a little silly about that, because it was very obvious to me that I could do it. I wasn't tired at all.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I wasn't really the one making the decisions on this run, so nothing that I could have done differently.
Post race
Warm down:

Some stretching and watching the medals presentation. Then out for breakfast/lunch at Sharkey's in Ladner village.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

N/A

Event comments:

This race was very well run and I don't say that just because it was put on by my cycling club. :) The race packages were pretty good. There was a nice new balance visor, a water bottle, a package of eload, a bar and a coupon for 10% off runners at the New Balance store and the race fee was only $35. There were also lots of door prizes, one of them being a DeVinci road bike. Heidi won a Bell bike helmet.

My only complaints about this race was that it was about 5-10 minutes late getting started and by the time we finished they had run out of bagles, watermelon and bananas. They did still have lots of oranges left though.

This was a really nice scenic run that was pancake flat. I would recommend it to anyone looking to do a half marathon. The swag was great too.

I don't feel stiff or sore at all today and I am so proud of my friend Heidi. I'll have to fire off an email to her to see how she is doing. ;)

Hey thanks ladies.

It sure was hot yesterday wasn't it? I am grateful for all the sprinklers along the way. I love the flat courses. A lot of my training runs are done in Richmond. I am not used to hills.

So swimming on Wednesday then?
