This will be the first time since 2007 that I'm not involved in some way (racing or volunteering). The race is in August for the first time, and I'll be away. Looking forward to racing (and volunteering) in 2012! In spite of all the logistical headaches and the crowds, NYC is a great race. Enjoy! |

Veteran 209 New York | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread This will also be my first NYC Tri and first time swimming in a wetsuit. Never had to race in one out here in Asia, but I guess I need to learn quickly when I move back in April. Any tips or suggestions on wetsuits? |

Elite 3140 | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread Any tips or suggestions on wetsuits? my vote is xterra...great wetsuit for the price....watch youtube videos on how to put on...the trick is to put it on as "high " as you can...if not you may find that you are a little too restricted in the shoulders....feed the legs untill the bottom of the suit is almost at your calf , hike it up high on your hips and all the way so it is loose on your shoulders...but check out those videos, because they can explain it better than me Im not doing NYC but have a oly in june and HIM in oct! good luck |

Member 413 | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread You all will have a blast! I did it past two years and will volunteer this year. I used a full body wet suit... the more I could put between my bare skin and that murky hudson river water the better (don't worry though, it's not too bad and that current is super duper powerful... will be your fastest swim ever) |

Champion 6046 New York, NY | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread I am also doing both NYC and Timberman - so I am treating NYC as a training day/peak for Timberman - and given the crowds that is appropriate. I just moved to NYC so I figure I have to do it....but if it is like Chicago, and St Anthony's it will be a one and done for me for big races...I treat them very much as training day with chip and just have fun and enjoy the crowds - trying to race it would be frustrating - I hear there are parts of the bike course that are quite congested.... |

Veteran 204 Massapequa, NY | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread I'm in as well. Just be prepared for extreme heat that time of the year for those of you going full wetsuits. I wear a sleeveless (primarily for mobility), but I also overheat very easily. I've also heard that the current depends on your wave, so dont under-prepare for your swim and ruin your day. This is my first NYC, and as a native and someone who works in Manhattan, I'm pumped. |

You can look at last years start times to figure out what time you'll be going off this year. needless to say, i'm not incredibly excited about transition closing 5:45 and my swim wave likely not being until 7:30 or so. thats a lot of time to obsess and freak out. 40-44 men take off much earlier than men 35-39, which will also factor in how much of a role heat will have on you..... |

It is good to be old! I get to start earlier. BUT.... I am VERY slow, so the heat will be there anyway. |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread I did the swim at a 1:10/100 pace. My usual pace is around 1:40/100. But I’ve been lucky and had the current strongly in my favor both years. If you’re one of the unlucky ones, you could be swimming against a slack current, or even with the current against you. I know some people who’ve been in later waves who’ve had the current against them and it’s taken them close to 40 minutes to finish a swim that took me under 20. |

Member 58 | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread in the pool I'm 1:32-1:35 (no flip turns) for 100yrds consistant for 2000+yrds no stopping - did the NYC Tri swim last year in 15:46 -- 104yrd/min. The current is crazy, it will pull you down the river, if you don't hang on to the rope off the starting dock you'll get swept down the river before the gun goes off. |

Member 65 Monroe, NY | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread This will be my third time doing the race and I am concerned that I will now be starting in a later age group (46). It is a lot of fun if you just relax and don't let the bike traffic get you down. It is crowded, but this is NY. When the current is flowing a bag of chips can do the distince in 20 min. Here is a link to the tide charts. I wonder if the water will be to warm in August for wetsuits. It was close the first year I did it. http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/tideshow.cgi

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: Nautica New York City Triathlon : Official Thread This is my A race and the first time I'll be doing this race. I've done two other Olympics this season in Ashland MA and Stamford CT. Both courses have super hilly bike portions in prep for NY. Viewing the course on MapMyRide there's 4 good size hills and two monsters. Just how bad are they? |
