Subject: For those who wear contacts

I know this is a crazy question, but do most of you who wear contacts/glasses, finish the swim and bike and run with glasses, or do you take time to put contacts in before the bike, or do you just do without? So far, I just use my glasses after I do a swim/bike brick.

Same here.  I can swim with the contacts using Aquasphere goggles.  I found some of the smaller goggles were too leaky but the slightly bigger mask-like style works well.

Last year was my first year in triathlon.  I didn't wear my contacts in races.  I used prescription sunglasses for the bike and run.  I don't have very bad eyesight, but I can't pass the DMV test without corrective lenses.  This year, I am going to try using my contacts in races.  I have been swimming in them since the first of the year.  My TYR Nest Pro goggles work well.

Good luck to you!  I hope you have a great season!

I wear single-use disposable soft contacts for all three disciplines.  Never had any problems with them on the swim.  The worst thing is getting dirt and grit in my eyes on the bike, but wrap-around sunglasses help with that.  Nice thing about disposables is that I can just pitch them at the end of the day.

X2. Never had one fall out but I would have an extra pair at T1 just in case but it would screw with T1time

I swim/bike/run with contacts although I prefer to wear glasses during my non-exercise activities.  I honestly don't think I could find my transition area without them.

I've never had a problem with my contacts on the swim (I assume you're wearing goggles) or the run.  I do occasionally feel like they are going to blow off of my eyelids while on the bike.  I suspect the problem iw with my Oakley sun glasses and not the contacts themselves.  (Oakly Flak Jackets).  I've had these glasses longer than I've been into triathlon - so I've never tried another pair.

Only time I've ever done a race without my contacts is the one race where I'd lost one the night before.  I've never had a problem in nearly 30 races.

I wear one contact in my left eye and always swim/bike/run with it. Otherwise I can't read my watch! Frown

I wear my contacts for the whole race, swim training and all outdoor training (so I can wear sunglasses).  If I'm inside on the treadmill or trainer I just wear my glasses.

I have been having trouble with the brand of two-week disposables I've been using otherwise I'd wear them all the time.  I'll be keeping a pair of glasses at transition for my HIM this summer just in case I need to ditch the contacts.

I've been swimming with contacts since junior high - 20 years ago - and have only ever lost one.  So I S/B/R with them. I have an extra set in my bag at transition just in case I lose one.

I HATE cycling with my contacts in because they dry out!  Has anybody who usually wears contacts tried prescription sunglasses to avoid this problem?  Or do you have any other solutions?

I was actually looking at some performance frames for at the eye clinic last month because they can put in prescription lenses.  They were probably even better than the sunglasses I already use for biking and running.  I don't know if they're available at the vision chains, but you should be able to find something like that through an ophthalmologist.

Contacts all the way.  I'm not sure I could sight during the OWS without them...

If you're interested, try it out during training.  Nothing new on race day.

I used to have this problem when I used crappy saline solution.  I switched to the expensive stuff and POW...no more problems.  I swim/bike/run in them and have zero problems.

What are you using specifically if you don't mind me asking?  I spend about $10 per bottle, and my contacts feel likes they are gonna flake right out of my eye about an hour into a bike ride.

I just put on a pair of regular sunglasses with my contacts in.  Not only does it keep your contacts from drying out, it also protects your eyes from debris, bugs, etc.

Of course, you could always just find a blazing downhill path and ride so fast that it makes your eyes water

This. I have ones you can wear continuously but will take them out and soak them the day before so they feel fresh in the morning.

x2 exact same boat here.
Only time I lost one was diving off the start blocks at a high school swim meet. I am extremely near-sighted and literally can't see without them. I can't imagine racing in my thick glasses but I know a lot of people do it with success.

I do the whole race with my contacts in and like to keep a spare pair in my transition bag in case I lose one during the swim.

Me too, plus 20 years of road racing with no problems.  I pulled the trigger on Lasik surgery in December, so I'm looking forward to competing without contacts.

S/B/R in my contacts.  I had some irritation/dryness issues at first. So now I rotate between two sets.  I have a set I do my swim workouts in, then I change those for a set to sit in front of the computer for 8+ hours.  Works great.

Contacts all the way through the race.  Never had any problem.

As far as eyes getting dry on the bike, if I don't have sunglasses on I wear a $2 pair of safety glasses.

Additionally, I also keep an extra set of lenses in transition for the just-in-case / worst-case scenario.

Same as most here, I do it all in my contacts. I use monthly disposable lenses (though I'm bad and change them every 3-4 months).
