Pre-race routine:

Up a little early today (5ish). Final prep (rack on car, bike on rack, etc.) Cup of decaf early, cup of regular with breakfast (peanut butter, banana, and honey on wheat). Departed home 7:30. Ride in to Lapihio from BTN.
Event warmup:

BTN-race HQ on the Fisher, nice and easy. Got checked in, met Dusty, David, and Heidi, then got settled in. Went for a warmup jog from the start up to the Reedy gate, primarily to go find a tree in the woods, then jogged back down. Very tight hamstring and hips :(

Comments:

I've been fighting this pulled hamstring since January, and it was tight as ever this morning. I did have some expectations of success today, but I think honestly I just wanted to finish this race. When I was through 12 at a 7:54 pace, I started to realize just how much I had screwed myself by going out too fast. I pushed too hard at the front end. 6:58 for mile 2??? Wilco Tango Foxtrot! There should not have been a single split in there with a 6 or 7 at the start of it for this race. At mile 15 or so, my heartrate began to climb and I could not rein it in. At the same time, my chest got tight, and I had a terrible pain in my left side. I was not drinking enough water. From 18 on it began to be a death march. I did a lot of walking from then on. I walked on uphills, downhills, etc. to try to control side pain, chest tightness, and heartrate. Started to get a little nauseous at 22-23. When I saw the 25 sign, I sucked it up and gave it all I had...a 9:48. When I saw the 26 sign, I hammered it, and got a 7:00/mile pace there somehow.
What would you do differently?:

Slower at the front end, save the quads. Not lose a week of training due to severe hamstring pain. Drink more water.
Post race
Warm down:

Oreo. Coke. 1/2 veggie burrito. More Coke. 10 minute leg massage. Mountain bike back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too hard on the front end. Not in running shape. Not running MY race at the start (was playing cat and mouse with a few others). Just running stupid. I was much more disciplined at Boston.

Body weight: I weighed in at 147 before breakfast. I was 140.8 after I got home, which was after drinking all the water/beer/coke during and after the race, and having lunch. That's WAY too much water loss for a marathon.

Event comments:

I told myself yesterday I won't do it again.

But we all know how that goes.

Course: Hilly. Rocky. Rooty. Rinse. Repeat. Actually, 2011 was the first year of a course change, that took out a lot of the bike/bridle trail at the start, and the long downhill/uphill combo on Graylyn. This year, the course went up to Airport Overlook and u-turned, much sooner than years past. Then instead of staying on Graylyn all the way up to Reedy Creek, we took a left down Sycamore. I did well on that section, but it beat me up early and hurt me down the road.

sorry to hear it was a tough day out there. Considering the injury, having to find and start a new job, I think you still hung tough out there and showed that you are one tough bugger.

Get that leg healed so you can show me some of the singletrack out there in Umstead.

Dude, I can't believe you ride your bike to a marathon, do a warm up jog and then ride it home. That is nuts. I don't care if it is only 4k.

Sucks about the pacing and hydration but I say good job.

Wow! That was a lot of water loss! Glad you made it through. And I hoped you enjoyed the atmosphere. I feel bad not being out there to support you this year after all your support last year. What was the animal this year?

We really could've used YOU out there Mark, to be right where I was last year!  There was no one greeting you as you came out of the woods onto Graylyn before mile 6.

2011-the year of the TICK!
