Subject: Internet need for speed
I would like to ask the wise folks of COJ for their help on internet access speed.

We've been using Cox for our internet access for years, a while back we moved to their 20 Mps and I don't know if we need that much we dropped down to the 12Mps but we're wondering if we even neec that much bandwith (is that the correct term?)

Here are the options from Cox and the prices

20 Mps $63.99 Month

12 Mps $49.99 Month

  3 Mbps $35.99 Month

  1 Mbps $25.99 Month

What is the difference between Mps & Mbps?

We do upload a lot of pictures and some video.  There are no more than two users at any given time.

mps doesn't exist. They are all Mbps. Dropping from 12 to 3 is a huge drop. I would stick to the 12.*














*This coming from someone paying $100 to cox a month for their 50 Mbps service.

We do Verizon fios bundle, HDTV, phone and internet for about $120 /month (I think).  Fast enough for me

Speedwise, our office of ~40 uses a 5mbps connection.

Do a speedtest.net and see what it really is.

You would be fine on 3 - that's more than most sources can provide.

The fine print will probably be in the monthly data limit. Ie, you get 100G/month on the 12 and maybe only 20G/month on the 3 - or maybe you have no limit, I don't know US plans.

I use to be on high speed, went lower, and am now back to 12.  3 would probably be enough for you based on your explanation of what you do, but I predict it would drive you crazy.  Day to day stuff are fine.  Surfing, etc.  Downloading anything drove me crazy.  A simple broadcast took 45 minutes, and heaven forbid you wanted two at the same time.  Now I am back to a simple 5 minutes and I am much happier.

Looks like the difference is the number of characters per line in their advertising. When they went jumped to 2 digit numbers they had to drop a character somewhere.

Thanks everyone, it looks like the 12 is probably best for us. I was thinking we could get by with the 3, VegasDivers thoguht the 12 would be best as well, as usual she was right.

I looked back at the Cox site and it appears that the Mps & Mbps was my old eyes not seeing what was right in front of me.

50 Mbps that a lot of porn data.

The small "b" in Mbps is for bit, whereas the capital "B" in MBps is for byte

The pricing scheme noted above appears that you save a little for each higher transfer rate.
3 Mbps is sufficient for home use, especially if you're using YouTube a lot.
I think 12 Mbps is overkill unless you require setting up a streaming server or something, or are quite spoiled for speed and don't care to pay out that much.

Realized I didn't answer the question.... out fios is 15 mps, we could go up to 25, but really 15 is plenty fast for day to day use

you could try dial up 56kbps (kilometers biked per second) that's pretty fast!!


Which ever you go for, remember the rate 3Mbps or 12Mbps is sold as "up to" 3Mbps etc.

you may have a sharing ratio on there, I am not sure if Cox has a dedicated service, but they will still have a disclaimer about uninterrupted service being required to achieve the max download.  Also as mentioned before there may be a limit on your data.

I would recommend the higher rate service, up to 3 Mbps could leave you at times with not a great service, remember when it hits the service provider they have a hierarchy of clients, those paying more are getting the bandwidth, if you are on a lower service they will make sure you lose out first.......

So the 3Mbps may work for you, if you received the 3Mbps, but when that becomes restricted, and becomes restricted quicker than the higher service, you will notice it........

While I wanted to go with the 3 VegasDiver aka Pam (my sweetie who as of today has been putting up with my ,,,,, I mean me for over 10 years) wanted the 12,,,,, Here is I think the key to this,,,,, two phrases 1. Yes Dear ,,,,,, when she says don't you yes dear me  Phrase 2. Ok Honey ....

When we go to Hawaii the condo we stay at has cox and it's painfully slow to upload our picture & videos, I don't know what the rate of speed is but I'll check it this year.

I did check our speed using the site someone mentioned (tks btw) and as of today upload is like 4 and download is like 17,,,, I don't knwo if Cox has made the change from 20 to 12 yet?

Dial up,,,,,, do people still have telephones with those little wires coming out of them?
