Everyone else:  Don't worry.  The e-bay auction for slots should open soon!  According to the Ironman website, the average winning bid for those  slots was only $40,000 last year.

Maybe start a big fundraiser to get the funds to bid...

Are they really allowed to sell the spots?  That is kind of sad

Congrats to everyone on the winning bids. Do BT proud and kick some butt on the Queen K!! Unfortunately, my brother did not make it this year either. He has applied the last 4 years  and has never been chosen.

As I understnad it, the race sells slots for charity.  Individuals are not selling their spots, lottery or otherwise (I might be wrong, but don't think so)

MCA - 2011-04-15 9:09 AM Any idea how many entries there were in the lottery?

I've wondered this for a while. I managed to get time with a race director for an Ironman race, and asked him. He told me he didn't know, but he'd check into it. I emailed him later, but I've never heard back. I wonder if that sort of info is confidential.

On the same topic, I've tried to ballpark the number, and my best guess is between 2000-5000 entries. What is your estimate, BT?

I found it interesting that even though they changed the lottery this year to be one big pool of 200 people regardless of nationality, the breakdown of winners stayed about the same (150 U.S. : 50 non-U.S.)

if you trust wikipedia:

"Another way of qualifying is the Ironman lottery. Two-hundred spots are reserved for athletes that enter the lottery, 50 of them being international spots, the other 150 being U.S. spots. The lottery entries are then drawn out of a pool of about 30,000 entries."

unfortunately, that portion of the entry has no reference, so who knows where that number comes from. I checked the lottery results (I didnt enter), and saw that one person from my town won a lottery spot. Quick google search shows that she's done a couple of stand alone mary's as fundraisers (~5 hours), and is doing boston this weekend. Wish her all the best in finishing.

Thats comical, I also check to see if anyone from my area made it!

One from St Pete, one from Lakeland and one from Sarasota all pretty close.

Yeah, my wife and I both did not get in.  Oh well, guess I'll have to just qualify at CdA.

ajusf16, you from Ruskin?  Wow, my old stomping grounds.  Grew up in Apollo Beach and went to East Bay.  You?

I am still at work and kind of dazed but I admit I have been searching for training plans. If anyone has an aggressive first time iron man plan that they loved, I would like to hear about it.

This will be my first 140.6. Last year I did my first 70.3 in 5:06. I am motivated and want to prove myself worthy of the entry, ie. try to hit two times my HIM time + 1 hour (or better). Realistic? We shall see. My wife is the one who wanted me to do this so she should be on board for the training.

Obviously I am readjusting which race is my "A" race and it may even change how hard I run my upcoming marathon so as to not throw off my training for too long (I was planning an attempt at a sub 3 hour marathon but that may cause too long of a recovery penalty.)

All advice is welcome.

With that kind of time in a 70.3 I'd say you are looking good already.  Just continue training smart so you stay injury-free is the important thing.

DuncanQH - 2011-04-15 11:11 AM I haven't even done my first Olympic yet, so this is purely curiosity... What's it cost to enter the draw?

$40

That's not bad... I can see entering every year if you're at that level.
