Grace for All
73F / 23C
Overcast
Total Time = 19m 23s
Overall Rank = 4/219
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/16
Pre-race routine:

The family and I went to pick up Karen (another AUMC runner) and we all rode downtown. Got there, got bibs, then I went for an easy 5/8-mile or so jog around downtown. Gu ~15 minutes before race start. Everything felt good, but I was getting a little winded on the easy jog, so I knew this was going to be a tough day.
Event warmup:

Easy jog around downtown, then a couple of quick pickups near race start. Felt good, but just not fast today.
Run
  • 19m 23s
  • 3.1 miles

Comments:

Moved along smartly out of the gate, got clear of the youth runners pretty early, settled in to 4th place overall. One runner came up and motored by about 1/2 mile in, then there were no more passes. Just before mile 2, I reeled in 4th place who went out too strong, and put him away for good.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Just felt off on speed today. Good thing is nothing hurts. Bad thing is nothing hurts; it's a 5k, it's supposed to hurt!
Post race
Warm down:

Ran the course backwards to intercept Lainey pushing the jogger with the kids. I took them and let her finish the race with her friend Karen. The kids crossed the line under their own power, Web even had a great finish line kick!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Chase run earlier in the week might not have been a great idea. Hard run Friday might not've either. Not sure, just felt slow.

Event comments:

Charity race that was on a beautiful course in scenic downtown Raleigh. Had a lot of fun with this one, and had fun at the end giving Web a road-racing lesson on how to run tangents. He said "Like on Nascar, right Dad?" Atta boy.
