You know my answer.  All on scuba and snorkeling though.

I've seen thousands, literally.  All different species.  Horn shark, swell shark, leopard shark, angel shark, blacktip, white tip, silver tip, galapagos, silky, scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead, grey reef, whale shark, blue shark, mako......

I never get tired of seeing this photo.  Very beautiful.

Have you ever seen a great white in the wild, Chris?

I work at Patrick AFB right on the beach here is Central Florida. Some of my friends who fly all the time take pictures of the beach right in front of and base and its amazing how many sharks you can see in the pictures swimming towards the surface.  Even with all the sharks, hardly anyone ever gets bitten around here. Just north of here around Daytona Beach, people are always getting attacked!!

After years of looking I have. A large bull shark of the coast of Belize (San Pedro Island) and beautiful sickle fin lemon sharks at the St. Croix Triathlon when I went out to visit Buck Island.

They are hard to find. I saw a bunch of leopard sharks (they're pretty shy) doing a swim/run duathlon in California and got in a group of (harmless) nurse sharks as they swam along the bottom at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. I got right in with them and swam along in their school. They must have thought, "that is a weird looking shark..."

Only time I ever felt the need to be careful was with the Bull shark who did exhibit some threatening behavior until I just swam back to the boat.

Not yet.... hope to someday, although I may change my mind if I ever do      I know one guy that saw one on a beach dive off Big Rock, Malibu.  Said he scampered from kelp stalk to kelp stalk back to shore.

There's another guy that was spearfishing off of the East End of Catalina, diving down into a group of fish, they parted and a GW came through.

Then there are the breaching great white's off of Gladstone's.

I've spoken to a number of dive boat captains, apparently they are pretty common at certain Catalina sites and are seen often by those that go there a lot.

I was Marine Recon in Hawaii and we would do amphibious training and SPI Rigging,(basically hooked to a rope under a helicopter and fly away) out of the water.  When the helo would pull us up out  of the water a few times we would see Tiger Sharks and Hammer heads circling our area.  Frown

No one ever got attacked

Only when scuba diving, never while training or otherwise swimming in the ocean except once when we abandoned our kayaks deliberately to swim with a huge basking shark off the SW coast of England - magnificent!

Farewell and adieu to you, Spanish Ladies,
Farewell and adieu to you, ladies of Spain;
For we've received orders for to sail for old Boston,
And so never more shall we see you again.

I am going to have to watch that movie again this weekend. I love it!

Saw 3 grey reef sharks while diving off grand Bahamas....beautiful creatures! What's mind blowing is how effortlessly they glide through the water and how little they cared that we were there. As for OWS I do that in lakes so brown you can see your hand in front of your face on only the best days.

12 or so foot tiger shark while body surfing at Pt. Panic on Oahu's south shore.   He was heading the other way, so we all just stayed out in the water.

I've seen a couple while diving but not up close.  The closest I came to one was when I was out snorkeling with a group.  I was just going around and there was a Nurse shark, just hanging out.  I stopped, realized it wasn't really interested in me so I slowly swam off (keeping an eye on it).  I went and found a buddy of mine who loves sharks and we went back to try to find it.  Eventually found the spot again and he managed to get some pictures of it.  Pretty cool!

Edit:  Oops, posted under my wife's account!

Not to freak anyone out, and I did not read all the previous responses, but I shaw a shark in the water during IMFL last year (read my race report, I mention it there, too).  It was only about 10 minutes into the race, I moved out to the right to find some space in the water, and right about when it started to get really deep (ie.; I could no longer see sand, just dark water), I looked down and there it was.  And, yes, it was definately a shark (I have a background in Biology and work for the Zoo).  It was swimming pretty far down and clearly heading out of our paths, but it was a shark.  A fairly big one, too.  Scared the freaking crap out of me.  I thought about it all day and it was one of the first things I told my family when I got done with the race more than 14 hours later!

When we were kids, about 16 we were surf casting off of Rockaway beach when everyone started running into the shore . I went to turn and run and he was behind me, i didnt stop to ask what kind he was but he did get a piece of my buddy, we have called him "Sharky" ever since and no he will not go anywhere near the water now.. I have not seen too many others and it goes thru my mind every race i do.

Almost every time we go to the beach. 99.999% of the time they are avoiding you just as much as you would like to avoid them. If everyone realized how close sharks were every time they got in, the beaches would be a bit less crowded. At least here in s fl.

Does alligator's count? Swimming in a canal in Flordia and was chased by an alligator. Alligators are my most feared. I was walking on water like you would see in a cartoon to get away! Very scary. No sharks but a huge sting ray with a youngling. Almost step on it while entering the ocean.
