Subject: My brother thinks he can do a half
I've been doing tris for 3 years, in July I did a half ironman in my home town (where my brother lives). I got done with the half and my brother said "what's the big deal, I could do that". My response "Ha, yeah right". So I talk to him yesterday and he tells me he has a team together for the half next year, he will be the cyclist. Then he says "I know I can do each sport individually but not all three together"....duh that's what we all think.

He is physically active both for his job and hobbies (volleyball and softball) and he goes to the gym a few times a week. I have no doubt with training he can do a triathlon (including a half) but it's just frustrating that he thinks he can jump right into a half ironman.

Actually it will be good that my brother is following his little sister instead of the other way around.

LOL....it's that macho-manism in him. When it comes time to back it up right then and there, they  make the excuses.

It would be REALLY cool if you beat his relay team next year!

He COULD train and get to the level where he could complete a half, but if he continues in his current fitness routine, no way. I say encourage him and then stomp him at the race.

I'm confused. How is he just "jumping right into" a HIM.  He's training for NEXT years race - and ONLY gonna do 1 leg?

He will NOT have done a triathlon, he will have done the biking leg of a triathlon. In my opinion, this does not make him a triathlete.

Congratulate him on attempting part of a triathlon. Smile when you tell him you're sure he could do the whole thing if he got into better shape.

He's not just jumping right in, he's going to do a what? 56 mile bike ride?  While that is respectable, for sure, that does not make him a triathlete.  Part of a triathlon team?  Sure, I guess you could argue that.

I would be cool if you encouraged him to train in all three events along with you.

As everyone has noted already, he's simply doing a 56 mile bike ride.    Smack him around on the bike leg, and get him to be a real traithlete and do all 3 sports.  Yes he can be a real triathlete by doing a sprint. (No tri snobs on this board.)

I hate when people think they can just wake up tomorrow and do this. It does get new people into the sport but man o man some days this is tough.

My brother doesn't have delusions of doing tris (he barely gets off the couch), but when I told him I was gonna do a tri, he told me *without skipping a beat* that when I got bored with that I could do ultras.  Wu-wu-what?!  Part of me thinks it's really funny that he thinks one does ultras when they "get bored" and the other part of me is flattered that he thinks I could do an ultra.

There will be people who just don't get it.  That's why there's the handy smile-and-nod response!

Dude thinks you can do an ultra. That's awesome! He thinks you are so buff you could just go out and do one. I say yuo train for a marathon and run an extra mile. Then you can tell him you did it

I'd give just about anything if my sister would consider taking up even one of the sports involved.  But, I know it's sometimes different between sisters and between brother/sister relationships.

He can try to jump right into a HIM.  And maybe he'll be great at it.  But I guarantee that before his training schedule even gets close to the HIM mark, he will have to eat his words of "What's the big deal?"

I saw, throw down the gauntlet!  Challenge him to do a HIM by himself next year, and see how quickly he back-pedals.

Be grateful that he's not like my family, who's a lot more along the lines of "Now you're doing those triathlon thingies, don't get crazy and do one of those other races." (Meaning ironman or maybe an adventure race.)

Families - gotta love'em.
